I'm not sure I like Disney on Blu-Ray.....

well, not Disney itself. it's the way hand-drawn animated films transfer over to Blu-Ray.

For example, I have BATB Diamond Edition and I really don't like the Blu-Ray version of it. I find the regular DVD's artwork a bit "softer" and truer to the original. Now BATB is also a combo of hand-drawn art and digital art, so maybe that's a factor.

I haven't watched Cinderella nor Peter Pan on Blu-Ray, so perhaps BATB is an outlier.

I'm really looking forward to Sleeping Beauty coming out this fall on diamond edition, but concerned about the Blu-Ray version because if it.

Unfounded? Am I off my rocker?

My wife feels the same way about them. She says they look 'too perfect'.
For me, the telltale sign is if you can still see some brushstrokes in the older hand-colored films, then they are well done. For newer animated films where they are digitally painted you won't see that. Also, older films you'll see some very fine lines drawn- especially Jungle Book and Sword in the Stone. If those disappear in blu-ray from the dvd version, then the film is 'over restored'. Sometimes Disney does a wonderful restoration job and really preserves the true art of these films and sometimes not as much. It depends on the film.

They didn't look "soft" when projected on a giant movie screen because of the high quality 35mm film presents. Blu-ray is actually closer to achieving that look than DVD ever was.

Sleeping Beauty was orginially exhibited in 70mm, twice the size of your average movie screen and as Walt said on his TV show the artwork "had to be larger, and more detailed". Blu-ray is the best way to watch the movie at home.

While Disney can (and does) go overboard with DNR (Digital Noise Reduction; where the computer erases "defects" like dirt and grain, but sometimes the line art of the drawings), the Diamond titles generally get the love they deserve.

People watching these movies at home for the last 25-30 years have grown accustomed to a certain look of softness and colour balance. Seeing something else for the first time can be jarring, but it doesn't mean it's wrong.

.

that's what I'm hoping for.

and i think your explanation is apt. it is "jarring" top see old classics in a fully restored digital form

I already GOT Sleeping Beauty on Blu-ray when it came round the first time, and it looks good.
And yes, it's a problem that movie theaters of their day just never showed them as "good" as they deserved to be.
