Woohoo!! What a trip! I had such an awesome time and I have so much to say about this trip, that I don't even know where to begin. I have tons of advice to give you all, and lots and lots of opinions!!! Let me start at the beginning and hopefully, this won't be too long, LOL!
Okay, we stayed 12 days at the All-Star Movies. It was wonderful! The kids loved the themeing and the adults thought is was great as well. We were in two rooms. DH, DS (4 years old), DD (10 months) and myself in one room. Mom and my sister (10 years) in the other. A word about securing rooms in particular buildings and faxing requests in advance. It did not work for us. I requested rooms in Toy Story about six months ago when I booked. Then, I faxed my request in four days before check in. A very nice note I wrote them explaining why I wanted Toy Story (mainly closeness to the main building and themeing). When we got there to check-in (we got there around 4PM) they had us all set up in.........Mighty Ducks. Aaaargh! So, I politely asked the CM to see if she could put me in Toy Story. Fortunately she was able to (Yipee!!!), but apparently, I did not need to bother making my requests in advance, cuz they didn't seem to do anything about it. Not sure if this is a symptom of value resorts or if it is the same everywhere. Just thought I'd let you know.
Anyway, the rooms were clean, and the housekeepers where great, setting up our Mickey and Minnie and balloons, etc. up everyday in cute places and poses and doing an excellent job of cleaning up! I noticed something that may have been a cutback, that I didn't really like. They used to have cute little bottles of shampoo and lots of soaps for us. Now they only give you one soap at the sink, and they have these stupid dispensers in the showers with body wash and shampoo. I miss my little bottles. I know, no big deal really, but I thought they were probably just trying to save some bucks.
The food at the food courts was excellent and cheap, although we mostly ate at table service restaurants in the parks and other resorts. The laundry room was nice (I did the wash once) and the pools were nice as well. Lots of kids in the Fantasia pool at night, but it was quiet in the early evening. My son discovered he was tall enough to touch the floor at the pool and absolutely loved it!
Bus service was excellent! We only waited about five minutes for a bus, except one time waiting for an Epcot bus in the late afternoon on a Sunday, we waited about 15 min. Other than that one time, the buses came very frequently, often had Magic on Demand (just when you figure the bus will be too full to fit you, out of nowhere comes a whole 'nother bus!! Magic!) and we usually had a seat, even on the way back at night. The bus drivers were so nice, and I only have two transport complaints:
1. Tyler, where were you??? We looked and looked every day at all the name tags and never once found a Tyler
2. What the heck is up with that stupid Blizzard Beach, Epcot route??? Usually you get one bus for each, but one time they had a combo bus, only the driver lied!! She picked up at the three All-Stars and says it is only an Epcot bus, no BB. But as soon as she pulls away from the last AS, she says "I know I told you all it was only an Epcot bus, but actually we have to stop at BB to pick up. We won't be dropping off just picking up and then we will head to Epcot and then back to the AS"! WHY??? There were people waiting to go to BB at the resorts that she just left there, while she was going to BB all along!!! Made me a little angry, but mostly just confused.
OK, on to the parks:
Hours, hours, hours!!! They extended the hours while we were there at Magic Kingdom, Epcot and Animal Kingdom. The hours they had posted at the website for my stay were:
MK 9-6; Epcot 10-9; AK 10-5
The actual hours posted at the resort were:
MK 9-7; Epcot 9-9; AK 9-5
The actual hours the parks were open were:
MK 9-9(!!!!); Epcot 9-9; AK 9-5:30
Woohoo!!!!!!!!!! Not that we stayed there the whole time, but I was glad to see they were open longer! They also added fireworks at MK! We found that with the children who really needed breaks, and to hit the sack early, the hours were perfect. We usually stayed at the parks till dinner (7pm) and then called it a day. We also had a character breakfast scheduled every single day of our trip. The ones in the parks we scheduled for 8AM. The meant that we were allowed in the parks before they were open, and we managed to finish breakfast by 9 so we were all set to start touring as soon as the ropes were dropped. Worked excellently for us!!! Great food, characters and still early!!
It was weird crowd wise. There seemed to be lots and lots of people there, which upset us a little cuz we expected it to be not too crowded. But, even though they were around, it did not make it hard for us to tour. Fastpass (God Bless the fastpass!!!) was excellent! We used it a lot and found it to work wonderfully! And the lines at most of the rides and attractions were never very long. The longest we waited was about 20 min, even though the posted wait time was 35. We found that the always seem to overestimate the wait times. We did not use fastpass unless the posted wait time was over 40 min. We did every ride we wanted to do, and some spur of the moment ones as well. My four year old loved everything!!! He was a little afraid of some of the rides, but for the most part, he enjoyed everything!
A word about babies. I know we have had tons of discussions (fights, LOL!) about bringing babies to the parks. I have some more to add now that I have nbeen there with a 10 month old.
She LOVED it! She went on all the rides that did not have a height requirement. She loved Buzz, Aladdin, IASW, Peter Pan etc. She never cried. She slept in her stroller though Illuminations and TAP (which btw, my four year old hated!!) She hated the sun in her face and loved the parades! She ate everything, and was well bahed everywhere. I would not hesitate to bring her or any baby back. But, I do have some tips if you are going to bring you baby:
Make them wear their hats. She hated wearing it, but after I burned my scalp on the first day, we made her wear it and by the third day, she was used to it. We scheduled lots of rest stops at in-door air conditioned places where we could get drinks and fruit. We also tried to keep a schedule. Up at 6:45, out by 7:30, breakfast at 8, breaks for drinks and snacks when we needed to, bed by 10 or so. A regular sit down lunch and/or dinner was also important, cuz fast food just doesn't cut it for a baby, (an adult either, btw) and the fast food places are too busy for a baby to really relax. Also, I ended up nursing just about everywhere. Those baby centers are great, but not convenient to go to every time you need to feed the baby. She nursed and slept through SE, Hall of Presidents, Snow White, and several others. Be flexible. Have fun!
Okay, back to the parks. We went to each park several times, so I will do an overall park review in stead of by the day.
MGM: We found the park to be sparkling. Didn't notice any of the complaints people mentioned about the park being run down. Actually, none of the parks looked run down or dirty to us AT ALL!Could be the fresh paint going up everywhere. The Stars and Motor Cars parade was our absloute favorite! DO NOT MISS IT!!! My son just about passed out from excitement when Darth Vader walked by, and that R2D2 was soooo cool!! Everyone is in that parade! A good and not crowded place to sit and watch: The very end of the parade route near the entrance on the right side. Ask a CM. We got to ride the Great Movie ride the first day we were there, which was a good thing, since it went down for rehab the next day. Lots of Indiana Jones stuff is on sale! We waited in line outside Pizza Planet for 30 min (in the sun!) for Buzz and Woody's autograph. Not my idea, but DS worships them and he really, really wanted to wait. It is the only place in the parks where you can meet them. And they are the only characters we ever waited in line for. Playhouse Disney show was excellent, One Man's Dream exhibit was great too! Excellent MGM experience!
Epcot: Same thing. Great time! We enjoyed the Kidcot stops and making the masks for the parade. Except for DS, we all loved the Tapestry of Nations parade including the baby who got to touch several of the puppets and handlers. This parade happened twice every day we went, and we found the first parade to be less crowded than the second. Illuminations was excellent as usual. We watched from Mexico at a lakeside table while eating churros and other stuff. This is the spot we always sit at. We visited the Annual Passholder lounge and we thought it was great as well. The CM at the entrance gave my sister a beaded bracelet exclusive to passholders. My son got some bug tatoos and stickers. We had drinks and cookies, watched som TV, colored some pages the CMs gave us. Made dinner reservations and got all our questions answered. Had a great time and went back a couple times. My only complaint: there is no bathroom there. Asked the CM about it and she said there used to be but the capacity was not big enough for the amount of people coming through there and it kept having plumbing problems. So they took it away. Oh well. Everything was great at Epcot and we had a fabulous time there!
Animal Kingdom: Too hot. Too hot. Not enough shade or air conditioning. Same problem we had last time we went. Tarzan Rocks was great. Chester and Hesters was.......... skipable. In fact, my husband was disgusted and flat out refused to go it. He said if he had wanted to go to a state fair, we could have stayed in NY! Kids liked Triceratops Spin, though. Boneyard was another hit with them. Went on Kali twice! Saw tons of animals on Safari! Loved the food at Pizzafari, but was too early for the new Annual Passholder lounge. Over all a nice time, but will have to go back and do more when it is not so hot (January!)
Magic Kingdom: Saved the best for last! This is our favorite park and we went a lot. Did Country bears just for you, Grizzly! Have some complaints about the sound system, though. They really need to fix it. We were seated about midtheatre and could hardly hear a thing. Missed Trixie altogether. And only a got a little of "There was blood on the saddle...." In fact, we were glad we knew the show pretty well, or we might not have known what was going on. Disappointed. CoP was closed. Did the peoplemover twice and Buzz three times. Lines were too long at Indy so we skipped it. Did everything in Fantasyland including strawberry swirls, which we ate at Cosmic Ray's cuz it had ac. Did Aladdin which I loved, btw. It does make that area a bit crowded, but it is a cool ride. Yes, it is similar to Dumbo, but the spitting camels do make it fun. Did Tiki birds and rembered how upset I was when I first saw the "rennovation". Miss the old show. Did Jungle Cruise with a sucky captain, but no wait. Did Pirates three times and loved it, but had trouble getting my son out of the shopping area afterwards. Dropped a bundle there. Ate Dole Whips. A lot, LOL! Heavenly stuff. Watched the Make a Dream Come True parade several times. We all loved it. Best place to watch. Liberty Square between the caramel popcorn and the silhouettes. Or, on the steps on the Liberty Tavern (which has excellent food btw). Saw the forecourt show and was very impressed! Do not miss it, it was lots of fun. It has fireworks, villians and princesses, plus some characters come out afterwards. Just great! Toontown was unimpressive as usual. Way too crowded and hot. Did a quick dash though Mickey's house and Minnie's hous and booked it outta there. Since we had the character breakfasts, my kids got to see Mickey tons of times, so we didn't feel compelled to enter the very, very crowded Judges Tent. Skipped the Barnstormer cuz it really needs a fastpass. We also skipped the mountains cuz we just don't do those kinds of rides. Maybe next time. Saw the Diamond Horseshow Revue. Excellent!! Not to be missed, and the ice cream is excellent as well. They gave the kids free cones, and the lemonade is yummy! Had an excellent time here!!
A few final words about two things: Pins and Characters.
I WAS NOT going to get into the silly pin thing before we left. Well, we got there and I had to eat crow. A lot. Those interactive pins are awesome! We love them. And while pin trading can be avoided if you really want to, it is very easy to get caught up in it and it sure is fun! we all got lanyards and some starter pins. Cast members are great to trade with. We found the managers/executive cms (those not in costume, but in a shirt and tie) to have the best pins, and to be the most patient and eager to trade. Guess they realize what a big money maker this thing is. Some cm were all about the rules and would not trade a pin they already had, etc. But some CMs were so cool about it. One CM saw how hard it was for my mom to trade her prized 101 Dalmations pins that came in a set I got her four years ago, so after she gave them up to trade for some Pooh ones, the CM gave the Dalmations back to mom (in effect giving her the Pooh ones for free!) Then it got better. we went to Pizzafari (where I believe the best pins in the whole parks are) and mom made off like a bandit!!! DS also got into the trading thing, and it really was a great part of our trip. Budget some $$$ in for pins, guys!
Characters. We noticed there were A LOT more characters around this visit than any of our other trips! There were also a lot more just around and not at official meet and greets. They walked around and stopped whereever they felt like it. Also, lots of harder to find ones, and they came out very often. Even though we had character breakfasts every day, we sometiems stopped to get other autographs, and except for the Buzz and Woody thing, we usually just went right up to them, maybe two families ahead of us at most and met and huged everyone. My sister had a fisherman style hat and some laundry markers and the characters signed that instead of an autograph book, and it worked really well. She filled up two hats and has a really nice souvenier. Many of the characters were impressed by her creativity, and thought it was a great idea. The Character Caravan sucks. The resort lobby was mobbed! They also sent the same characters two days in a row. we never waited for them, but were a little annoyed at having trouble navigating our stroller through the crowds so early in the AM. It was the same way at the deluxe resorts that happened to have Character Caravan on the mornings we were there for our character breakfasts. I was so, so happy to be able to say to my son "You know what, we are going to meet Goofy right now at breakfast, so let's not wait in this line." Dump the stupid thing. It does nothing but create gridlock.
Anyway, I just looked at this post is huuuuuuuuge. So, so sorry, but I have a lot to say. Anyway, I ate at sit down restaurants most of the time. We also went to DTD. I have reviews and advice for both. Just let me know if you want me to start threads on those, or if y'all have had enough of reading my stuff. Also I can tell you all about my character breakfasts (some which were better than others). Anyway, I had an excellent time all around, and I cannot wait the six months till we go back!!!!!
Okay, we stayed 12 days at the All-Star Movies. It was wonderful! The kids loved the themeing and the adults thought is was great as well. We were in two rooms.
