I have a question regarding identification and passports. We will be cruising April 2016 with a 14 month old, a 4 night on the dream out of port canaveral. What identification is necessary and what is recommended?

I've cruised with my then ten month old twins and we have two more scheduled in the next six months. That being said, a copy of their birth certificate will suffice.

As mentioned before, a Birth Certificate is all that is required for minors, along with (at least) Photo ID and Birth Certificates for BOTH parents listed on the child's Birth Certificate. If not travelling with both parents, you will need consent in writing, notarized, from the other parent.
Now you asked what is recommended -- I would recommend a passport for everyone in the travelling party. While not required on closed-loop cruises (start and end in the same port of call) should you need to return to the United States early for any emergency, you will need a passport. Better safe than sorry!

I would get a passport for everyone. Better be safe then sorry. I always thought that if something happened to my while travelling with my kids, I would want to make it easier for them to get back into the country without me.

We're sailing on Nov 13 with our son who will turn 1 the day before. We went ahead and got him a passport just to be safe. It trumps all other forms of ID, and is necessary in case of emergency.
