I just lost my job and I'm going to Disney World

I was excited for tomorrow because it will be one week until my Disney trip and this morning I was called in for a staff meeting to say that the store I work in is closing - 10 days after I get back from my trip!

I don't get a severance package or unemployment because they offered me 12 hours a week at another location but it is a 2 hour bus ride each way and I'm not spending 4 hours of traveling to work a 3-4 hour shift.

I went through the stages of grief pretty quickly and thanks to my incredibly supportive and laid back boyfriend (we live together) who said, "Don't worry, we're doing OK financially and you are too smart for that job and have bigger things on your plate anyway" I am thinking of this as a good move,

I have been working part time as a home based travel agent for 3 years and used retail to supplement that income. I also do family and wedding photography on the side. I will now put forth more effort in those and look at my Disney trip (part travel conference part solo trip) as a celebration of my new endeavours.

So after my trip I will officially be 100% self employed. I have already made an appointment with my financial advisor and have discussed with my agency owner who is thrilled to have me as a full time agent and has offered me a position as the Disney Ambassador with our company making sure agents are trained, keeping them up to date on promotions and helping them with their Disney bookings. She has offered to use some agency funds for my upcoming trip expenses and has also offered to pay for my photos I will take there to use on our agency website.

Things were bleak a few hours ago but looking good now...how bad can they be? I'm still going to Disney World!!!

Like you said, you had other sources of income. You just have to up the effort on them.
Going to Disney World most definitely takes the sting out of losing your job.

Edit: I read your post again. You lose a retail job, and will come back from your WDW trip with a WDW related job? Your situation keeps sounding better and better!

I can already use the trip as a tax write off for the most part. The first 5 days are solo and that will be at my expense but my travel agency owner and I are discussing fees for the photos I will be taking then.

The next 5 days are for a travel conference and I'm one of the agents representing my agency. We're receiving an award too! Those days will be a tax write off for my travel business.

Thank you for all of the encouraging words and well wishes. I do believe this was just the kick in the butt I needed to really become fully self employed. Actually once the initial shock and stress wore off it feels pretty great.

My BF and I are now discussing plans to either buy or build a house next year if this year goes well and build an indoor/outdoor photography studio and have a travel office for me. My agency just announced on our private FB page that I will be the Disney Ambassador starting July 1st. I also just contacted a friend that runs a sunflower maze on her farm and got exclusive rights for photo shoots in the maze and can book family portrait sessions there as well.

Things are going to be just fine. A little bump in the road but I think I'll just sail right over it.

I did ask if they would reconsider and showed them how terrible the transit system is here. I'm not expecting much but figured it never hurts to ask and a few weeks or a month might be just what I need to get back on my feet.
