Hi all! I was just wondering if the travel bags they sell which includes the 3.5 oz. liquid stuff needed for your trip is a good idea? This'll be our 1st flight since 1997. We haven't experienced the security yet! Thanks for your help. PS- Did I waste my $$$? ( Hubby thinks so).

You can always pack the travel bags in your checked luggage. My husband works for Homeland Security and he suggested not putting them in my carry ons. Some TSO's are a bit zealous and will just hold up the line, and take it out to inspect it, while others realize its OK.

If you're checking bags you're better off packing any liquids in your checked bags put them in plastic bags to catch any possible leakage.

If your intent is to only use carry-on, pack any liquids in 3oz or smaller bottles and keep them in a small zip-lock bag easily removed from your carry-on. You'll have to put them through x-ray separately in the zip-lock bag. Even separated, having the liquids at all can slow you down, but not significantly. Anything larger than 3oz will be disposed of.

BTW-sorry to ask so many questions..... Does anyone know the TSA policy about cigarettes, lighters, and matches. The site seems to be kind of vague on the rules...??? thanks again for all of your help! Really anxious!!!

Cigarretes no problem. Matches and lighters you are better off to purchase at your destination.

From the TSA website:

TSA does not prohibit standard lighters in carry-on or checked baggage. Torch and micro-lighters are prohibited in both carry-on and checked baggage.
For safety reasons, however, the Department of Transportation (DOT) restricts the number of standard lighters (disposable, Zippo, non-torch lighters) in the cabin of the aircraft to one per passenger. Passengers are limited to two fueled lighters in checked baggage, and only if properly packaged pursuant to DOT approved packaging requirements.

"Strike anywhere" matches are prohibited in carry-on baggage and checked baggage. One book of safety (non-strike anywhere) matches are permitted in a carry-on bag, but all matches are prohibited in checked baggage.
Even if an item is generally permitted, it may be subject to additional screening or not allowed through the checkpoint if it triggers an alarm during the screening process, appears to have been tampered with, or poses other security concerns. The final decision rests with TSA on whether to allow any items on the plane.

I'm right there with you. Flying WEDNESDAY MORNING (omg!) for the first time in ....15 YEARS. I'm scared half to death. More of the airport and airport security than of actually flying. I just can't wait to land in Orlando and hit their Lush (cosmetics!) store... it's going to be my special "treat" for surviving the plane ride. And, more importantly, Pittsburgh International Airport.

Uggggh.

Good luck to you. I'm sure all will be OK. Do you have an anxiety med?

Getting an actual "TSA approved" bag is usually overkill. All you need is a quart-size (sandwich size) ziploc baggie.

I do have a couple small 3-ounce bottles from the travel section at Target that I use to put body wash and shampoo in, but those go in my checked bag. (It's mostly so I don't have to lug the full bottles with me) The only things that go in the baggie in my carry-on are the things I might need *during* the flight, namely a small bottle of contact lens solution and a bottle of eyedrops. Everything else, including a larger bottle of contacts solution, goes in the checked bag.

Sometimes it is easy just to buy the things you need when you get there. Things like toiletries lighters, matches etc. Depends on the destination as well.
The only thing I suggest bringing in a carry on is any meds you may need. I sometimes also pack one change of clothes...you never know!

I've flown many times since 2001, and have never had a problem with security.
Though I must admit, I get to the airport way early for my flights.
For example, my most recent flight was to Vegas about a year ago. I had an 8am-ish flight out of BWI, and I got to the airport sometime between 4 and 5am. Partially, this was due to me having about a two hour drive to the airport. Plus, not sleeping the night before due to being paranoid about missing my wake up. I'll never be one of those people running for the gate at the last minute at least.

I will be doing similar on my flight to Orlando in December. I got a 7:10am departure from BWI, so I'll be pulling an all-nighter then too.

I bring my pills in carryon also.
Just remember, you are supposed to have them in the properly marked prescription bottles. You aren't supposed to have them like in those seven day case things. I'm not sure how strictly they enforce that, if at all anymore.

they do not really enforce at all unless it is a liquid.

Also, when going through security (I found this out the hard way sort of in Syracuse when Security wasn't exactly friendly), if anyone brings a laptop, you can't use the same container for it that you would anything else. You'll need a separate bin. I personally feel that's lame, but what do I know?
