I read the following article in the Orlando Sentinel this morning:

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/orl-crash081102.story?coll=orl-home-headlines.

That looked amazing and horrific.

I just wondered about our regular posters who work at WDW:

(1) Did you know the WDW employees who died as a result of the accident,

(2) What does Disney do in the way of announcements to cast members when deaths such as this occur,

(3) Were you caught in the traffic jam, and

(4) What normally happens at WDW when so many people can't get to work? Do other shifts stay on until someone gets there? If so, do you get comp time or overtime? [I am thinking of other times when traffic jams have been newsworthy, like when smoke blanketed the area during the forest fires a while back, etc.]

I really regret the deaths of those poor people who were just on their way to work. Things like this are always tragic. If anyone knows them, I send my regards and prayers.

I was going to the Magic Kingdom around 3 p.m. coming from downtown orlando but avoided I-4 all together after watching the news. I took the back roads to get to disney but it still took a lot longer than normal. I ended at westwood @ central florida parkway and was able to jump on I-4, they opened the east bound lane a little earlier.

it was really bad.. yesterday at work we were all assuming that the bridge would collapse. Pieces of it were falling off, and we were just waiting for the whole thing to go

I know a few folks that were late because of this. Usually, in extenuating circumstances as this, Coordinators will "adjust" folks schedule, so they will not be penalized for being unavoidably late. I know last year, there was a bomb threat at the intersection of 192 and 535... I had to backtrack to John Young Pkwy, and take the Oceola Parkway (Including paying the $$$ in tolls)... traffic was backed up on 192 for miles... and also on Osceola, since everyone had to backtrack and re-route. What normally took me a half hour took me nearly 2hrs... Thankfully, my management made sure I wasnt penalized.

If that was the one at the Texaco station, I know what you are talking about. That was a mess.

I-4 has got to be one of the most dangerous roads i have ever driven on (I-595 isnt much better)...granted it says it was the trucks steering that went out..but as anyone who lives in orlando can tell you....I-4 is like a automobile graveyard...too many accidents.....mostly because of confusing street signs and the amount of trucks that travel the road...

For a "what a relief" comment....

I´m glad that only two persons were killed in this. It could have been A LOT worse! I guess it was a "lucky" accident.

I came from the Tampa Side about 3 PM and there was no back-up on the west side of Disney. I-4 sucks anywhere in the state. Orlando really needs an I-404 beltway for trucks and commercial vehicles passing by. There is plenty of land to build it.

I live near Seminole County, North of WDW. I made sure to get out to work much eariler before. It usually takes me about 40 minutes to get to work. I left two hours before and still was late!

I dont think there would be a I 404 bypass around Orlando. It seems that any new Highway/Freeway built these days is a tollroad. There are plans for the Southwest Beltway , a tollroad, beginning at the turnpike and skirting the western border of the WDW property going south and connecting up with I4 a few miles south of the WDW southern border. I dont know if they have got the greenlight on the project but its proposed at this time,

That is the problem with Florida. All other states I visited this summer (drove from here to California and Back) had freeways. The taxpayers need to stop being cheapskates. I would rather have a freeway built that everyone can use (but Sun Pass does work well on the toll roads)

I think thats really sad, two innocent motorists killed as a result of the actions of another driver. The driver who swerved to avoid the concrete was obviously not concentrating on the road and the surrounding traffic. In a situation such as this it is ALWAYS safer to brake than to change lanes, apart from that I would also suggest that the entire flow of traffic was moving way too fast for the conditions.
My thoughts go to the families.
