hurricane season in October?

Sorry if this question has been asked before but I couldn't find it related to October.

For all the Orlando residents / frequent fall WDW travelers, how is the hurriance season in mid-October? I am going October 13-17 and I am curious about if hurricane/tropical storms are usually over or close to over by then. I don't really the mind the rain but just wondering what else to expect. I normally go in June and extremely severe weather is not usually a big issue. Thanks all!

They are unpredictable, there really is no answer to that sorry. I know Nov. 1st is the end date and such, but anything is possible.....

There have been some strong hurricanes develop well into October. The only thing is to make plans and keep your fingers crossed. This is not only the case in Florida but all along the Gulf and East coasts. Don't let hurricane season prevent you from planning a wonderful trip.

Like others said, there's no way to know. The season goes from June through November. Traditionally, there are more in the warmer months (by October things generally start cooling down a smidge), but it's not out of the picture completely.

Keep and eye on the weather as the day comes closer, but don't panic. Hurricanes are a ever-present factor in Florida weather, just that this year it's been much more prevelent a force. The vast majority of days go by each summer without hurricane warnings. Keep in mind this is an extreme season, not the typical season.

Also during the Oct months the storms tend to be less strong due to the cooling of the oceans.

There are plenty of web sites out there that can give much more detail on this topic suchs as NOAA and NHC sites.

Annual Cycle of Atlantic Hurricanes

The peak of the Atlantic hurricane season happens during the months of August to September, as seen in Figure 1, which shows the average number of hurricanes in the Atlantic per month from 1950-2001. The official hurricane season is defined from June to November, but hurricanes occasionally form in other months.

Yeah hurrican season peaks in September so it's kinda hard to say exactly what will happen with any upcoming storms.

Oh BTW... we now have tropical storm Ivan out in the Atlantic that we're going to need to keep an eye on. UGH! Go away Ivan!!!

Yeah, Chief
Hurricane season doesn't end until November 1st. Just play the odds that florida has gotten two already. What are the odds of getting a third?

As correctly stated, hurricane season ends on November 30th. Hurricane season peaks around the 10th of September. That would mean that you would have the same chance of having a storm form in mid-October that you would have in early to mid-August. The odds of having a storm on a certain day in a certain spot are very slim. Just go ahead with your plans and don't worry about it.

I see that there may be a debate as to when hurricane season ends. I think that it used to be Nov 1 and was changed to Nov 30 a few years back. Not that changing the dates on hurricane season matters much. If one is going for form, I don't think it cares whether WE say it is hurricane season or not. Anyway, we don't get much activity in October or November NORMALLY, but as some have already said, this is not a NORMAL season.

The odds of a hurricane hitting on your trip are always pretty slim. But each storm is independent of the other. Sort of like craps, each roll of the dice is not influenced by the roll that comes before it. When the dice land, you take what you get. Same thing with Hurricanes.

(Actually some weathermen say, if anything it looks like the weather conditions are primed to send any carribbean storm Florida's way. Unless those conditions change, Florida might see a long string of storms this season.)

We have gone to WDW in mid Oct twice. Both times hurricanes hit either just before we got there or just after we left. We just missed them. I'm hoping for the same this time. Only this time we are going earlier Oct. 6-9.
