How my trip got derailed or "Why do I do this?"......

So brief note about me and my family, we are foster parents for huskies that come in to rescue(we work with Norsled, one of the biggest NorCal rescue groups for Northern breeds). We have 4 of our own, three huskies, one Golden retriever(the stray that stayed). This week I got an urgent message from our rescue coordinator who needed an emergency placement for a 3yr old who was taken by Animal control for abuse and because she was skittish and nervous, she was deemed "unadoptable". I sent my oldest(our resident animal whisperer and I think he's part dog) to assess and she took to him like Pooh to honey! Long story short, Kirah was pulled from the shelter(a high kill shelter) and brought to our house where she has turned out not to be skittish, nervous, aggressive, or any other of those things the shelter deemed her. Now however, she seems not to have understood the term "foster home" and thinks she belongs here(it's been 2 days) and if she stays, we may end up pushing our May trip out to say October 2016(she has rather high medical costs due to the abuse and her adoption fee is a bit much but worth it). I don't want to move the trip since it is our first time ever going to WDW but unless a discount for a deluxe comes around between now and our trip, we will be pushing it back to make sure Miss Kirah is comfortable and feels safe and secure. She has separation anxiety and needs a human(she prefers Josh but will take me if he is gone or I have a carrot for her) So here is Miss Kirah, the nervous, un-adoptable dog..... You can see what a danger she is.....

LOL! You're not helping the "she's just a foster" angle. LOL But seriously, she blended so seemlessly with our other four and it is never the ones we pick, it's the ones that pick us, isn't that how it goes?

Besides, late Sept/early Oct is a good time too right?

She is a beautiful girl. It's great that you are able to help those dogs and whatever your decision is it is a great thing to help them find good and loving homes.

You do it because you have a big heart and she came into your life at the time she was meant to appear. The best dogs in my life were the ones that chose me first. Delaying the trip by a little.... may be O.K. for what you are getting in return.
As a professional trainer, looong time kennel owner and one who seees a lot of mis diagnosed pets.... Yeah they blow the calls all the time. I get a lot of clients that have more hope than they were given... and sadly some that are placed as family pets that are really dangerous.
Too many dogs are not evaluated properly or placed properly. Theres a lot of dogs out there that just need the right handling, patience understanding and right circumstances to come around. Others are sadly too far gone to come around. Someone with enough experience and talent needs to determine properly which way it goes, and not all humane groups have that experienced person on board.
Hope she continues to respond favorably to you and your family and will be a good fit to your home. AND we've enjoyed our Sept & Oct trips.

Adorable! She's lucky to be with you, either as a foster or a permanent member of the family. If you do adopt her, any chance of getting her insured, or would all her issues be considered "pre-existing"? Pet insurance can be a great safety net if you can get it. Saved us literally thousands with our lab.

Either way, Sept/October is a great time to go to Disney! There's Food & Wine Festival going on, and all the Halloween stuff! The Halloween party is really a lot of fun, if you don't mind adding a hard ticket event.

Your organization includes rescuing Sammies? Do you know if there is a similar group in Colorado? I/my family has owned several Sammies (best breed, as far as I'm concerned) and I so want to adopt a rescue when I move to Colorado in the next couple of years. I currently live in Florida and the heat/humidity isn't the best environment for a Sammie - even though we've had two here in Florida (sadly, both had to be put down due to pancreatic cancer). I don't want to take up time on this thread, so could you, at your convenience, please PM me? Thanks.

Our childhood friends had a malamute and the other a Siberian husky. We thought it would be fun to harness them together so they could pull us in a wagon around the neighborhood. Fortunately, someone in our group of kids had some common sense and convinced us that it would be a bad idea (and it wasn't me, lol).

Beautiful dogs. WDW can wait. Kirah needs you. And you both special people. I'm going to cry.

Thank you! Yes, some(not all so no one freak out about me saying this ok? LOL) shelters have no idea how to truly assess an animal and to make matters worse, they do not consider that some of these dogs are Infinitely loving, just terrified in the cell block config with other dogs barking themselves hoarse.

Fostering is a great thing, it is just so easy to get attached and hard to let them go. We have done the same thing, but for us it is important to not get too attached. We decided two is our maximum and have stuck to that. We have two rescues, a Maltese and a Maltipoo. We have been lucky enough to find homes for several dogs and a couple of cats too. Nothing wrong with letting them go to another good home, and at some point you have to decide just how many you can actually keep. I admire your efforts.

Oh Miss Kira, she will give you a "High Ten". She's so goofy! Two mornings in a row, she has taken a flying leap off my floor and onto my chest! So along with no one explaining to her what "foster" means, she also thinks she's a cat......

Well we have decided(as a family thnkfully! LOL) that Miss Kirah Soze(to round out our lineup of The Usual Suspects) has become a permanent family member and it really was not our decision at all(is it ever?) because she just fit. My sister thinks I am insane but she always has so that is no biggie and our little brother has 9 kids(7 his and 2 added) so who is really insane? LOL

She has proven that she belongs here both by action and attitude. Although huskies and goldens are usually high energy, our four are really big couch potatoes and it turns out that she is too. There are your random 3am wrassllin' matches but they only last about 15min and then they all pass out.

So even with adding her, we are still considering May but looking more towards Oct/Nov in order to save a little more $$ and maybe enjoy Halloween decor in the parks. We've done Christmas in DLR but never Halloween and we love Halloween in this family, more so than Christmas.

As with all teenagers(since she is 3yrs old) she has selective hearing! LOL
