How is tip determined?

I have done the dining plan every year since it's inception, however, this is my first time going since gratuity has been excluded from it. With the dining plan, how are we supposed to know what the gratuity should be? I am wondering if they give you a receipt that suggests what a gratuity should be. My trip is fast approaching and I have been wondering.

They will give you a receipt that will show an 18% and 20% gratuity on it. It is calculated off the menu price of whatever your party orders so understandably your suggested tip amount will be greater if your entire party orders the lobster vs. hamburgers.

Here in New York, it is customary to tip an amount that is double what the tax on the meal is. So if $3.00 is the tax, the tip should be AT LEAST $6.00.

That would really depend on the tax rate which in Florida varies by county. In fact WDW falls in 2 different counties both of which have different sales tax rates. Orange county, which most of WDW falls in, has a 6.5% rate and Osceola county has a 7% rate. Doubling the Tip in the majority of WDW would only be around a 13% tip.

Tip based on the service you received, not an arbitrary number agreed upon by a union.

I've had waiters bust their hump to see I was well taken care of at college pizza joints, and I've had waiters barely acknowledge I was alive at posh upscale eateries. They got a tip based on how high I was on their list of priorities, not how high the bill was.

Also keep in mind if you have 6 or more in your party, you will automatically be charged an 18% gratuity.

Gratuity should be figured on the cost of food you order (not what is paid for the DDP) pre tax before any discounts. For instance, if your party is less than 6, and you order $100 worth of food (pre tax) the customary tip for that meal would be between $15 and $20. Obviously that may vary depending on level of service, but if one has a reason to not tip the customary amount (less than), it should be brought to the manager's attention so that they can address any problems with service immediately.

On the other side of the coin, if service is excellent and you choose to tip more, then that should also be addressed with a manager so that the CM is acknowledged by management for their excellent service as well. Even stopping at the podium on the way out and asking if there is a comment card to fill out to show your appreciation without seeing a manager would benefit the server. There is nothing more rewarding for a job well done that a stranger that takes the time to address your service on a more personal level such as that.

That is because the tax in NYC is 8.375% and in other places in NYS its around the same amount so that tends to work for us.
