I know that Disney is trying to bring The Little Mermaid and Mary Poppins to Broadway and both are awesome projects. But this week, I found out they plan to bring Tarzan to Broadway as well. I love Tarzan but I just can't imagine how it could possibly work on Broadway. If you have the collector's edition of the dvd, they repeatedly stress how the things the animated Tarzan does simply cannot be done by a real man. Also, one of the things that made Tarzan great was the visuals, the jumping through the vines, the roller coaster ride through the trees... how on earth can that be done on stage? The movie also relies more on action and less dialogue to tell the story, I don't think that bodes well for a broadway show. Also, it's not the typical musical like the other movies, most of the songs are pop songs sung in narration. I know Disney has Tarzan Rocks! but that's more of a concert with some acrobats than a broadway show. I can acutally imagine a stage version of the Little Mermaid... but I just don't see how a broadway version of Tarzan could work.
