How early to wait for NYE Fireworks?

We will be in MK on Dec. 30 when they have the "practice run" of the NYE fireworks. When should we get in our spot? We have reservations at BOG at 4:30 so we probably won't be able to start waiting until 6 or after. Is that too late? I know they have another fireworks show at 6:30, so I don't know if people will watch both or leave after the first one and open up some spots. When do you guys think we should start waiting? (We're aiming for the hub btw, but if you guys don't think that it's possible after 6, where is the best place to go?)

The 30th shouldn't be too bad, you should easily be able to find a decent spot 30-60 minutes before the fireworks. The new hub has definitely helped with the crowding issues.

We've been to the MK the last 2 years on both July 3rd and Dec 30th. I have found that it is pretty easy to get a spot in the fastpass viewing areas. They no longer offer FP+ for magic kingdom fireworks, so you don't need a fastpass to get in, but it seems like the masses don't realize this and it doesn't really fill up. These areas have the AstroTurf and people will begin staking out spots by sitting on the ground earlier in the evening. Once it gets close to showtime, everyone stands up and it opens up a massive amount of space.
