How does this Jedi training thing work

We are having a grand gathering come this September. My sister is getting crazy about how she "has to" get her son into the Jedi training. How difficult is it to get a child into it? I told her go at rope drop and head over directly to sign him up, if it's that important. I really have no experience with it since my son is not a Star Wars fan and we've never even stopped to watch the Jedi training. Is it as insane as the lines to just get a fastpass for TSM at rope drop? Any thought or experience would be appreciated.

Both of my kids (5 & 7) participated last trip. Get there for rope or soon after - they book groups of 15 kids for each show first thing in the morning, and when they run out of spots, that's it for the day. They sign up 120 kids for the day. We were at the rope drop point in front of Hollywood and Vine and bolted to Star Tours with about 5 other families. Both kids got into the first show - which was sometime around 10 AM - and when we got there they were still signing up kids for the day, but it was during December at a not so busy time in the parks. It was nothing like the mayhem of people that ran straight for TSM. VERY IMPORTANT - THE KIDS MUST BE WITH YOU WHEN SIGNING THEM UP. They will NOT sign up a kid just based on the parent being there - and the woman at sign up said there were a LOT of ed off parents that let the kid sleep in with their spouse and couldn't be signed up. If the kids are Star Wars fans they will lose their minds. It was awesome.

Do you need your park pass with you when you sign up? Or can I take the kids and send DH over to TSM to get fast passes?

You do not need your park passes - we did the same thing. We sent my mom for TSM fastpasses while we registered the kids. They need the kids there because they ask them a few questions (are you ready to learn to use the force, do you want to defeat Darth Vader, etc.) to be sure they will actually participate in the show. Good luck!
