How can I start a Disney appreciation club at my school?

Hi! So I'm a university student in Canada, hoping to start a Disney Appreciation Club :) I wanted to get some insight because I'm concerned when it comes to Disney ... like if there would be copyright issues, for example. So I have a couple questions. First, is there a name we could call the club that doesn't have "Disney" in the title?

Second question, what are some club activity ideas? So far, I've come up with Movie Monday, Trivia Night twice a month, Games Night (Disney monopoly, etc) ... but what else could we do?

I would also like to incorporate a fundraiser once a term, perhaps for a cause Disney works with a lot (like a Make-a-Wish foundation, just for example).

Any and all feedback is welcome :) Thanks!

Hi there.

We have a Star Wars club at my school (actually, I am not a member...) so I don't think there would be any real copyright issues with that. However, I am not located in Canada, but if it's not an issue in the US, I can't imagine it would be any different in Canada. The only thing may be that you can't charge admission. Might. I'm not a lawyer in the US, certainly not in Canada.

First, you need to find out what your school's policy on starting clubs is. Most schools require that you have a faculty member to sponsor your club, as well as a certain number of members in order to keep the club going. Your school would also be able to help you if you are unsure whether you would violate a copyright law. Second, you'll need to figure out what time you'll meet and where. Third, before your first meeting, you'll need to advertise for members. Put up posters in the dorms and in the quads, if your school has an online portal, post it there, just do whatever you can to get the word out.

What you have as far as movie night, game nights, and trivia night should be fine for now. Most clubs only meet once a week, so that should be quite enough to hold you for a while. You could also do Disney arts and crafts, learn how to draw a character (if you can get an Arts major to help that is), have Disney parties with dancing and possibly karaoke, etc. Just get some members first. Odds are they will have a lot of suggestions and will be able to tell you what they do and do not want to do (so if everyone says no to the drawing or the karaoke, you can come up with something else). If you want to do some charity, you can do bake sales, fundraisers, etc. Just focus on getting some members first and the ideas will start to come in.
