Probably not much of a market for 17 points but I will not use them this year and when I bank next years points these will be lost. I was wondering how I would go about trying to rent them out, etc... Thanks

You can try the Disboards but you are required to other pay to post to the board or be an active member in the community. Or the other option is try this site. He is reputable, but i don't know if they want that few points.

Also technically you are not allowed to rent points for money.

Sorry, but this isn't true. "Renting points"' or more accurately, making a reservation for a non-member and receiving payment for it, is expressly allowed by DVC. What is not allowed is for a member to receive compensation for transferred in vacation points.

Looks like about $10 - $12 a point say $170 total. I know that does not seem like much but it could be used for gas, air fare, tickets, or meals for our Dec trip

I was just about to post that I was confused by the whole DVC rental process when I finally figured out the system (I think):

As a DVC point holder, you can receive compensation for said points if you as the point holder makes the reservation, based on resort availability of course. This is essentially what the DVC rental sites do. Mousesavers.com has excellent information on this discussion.

However, as another poster wrote, you cannot receive compensation for point transfers. Basically, you'd have to "give away" your points. If DVC were to find out money or goods were exchanged for point transfers, both parties could lose their DVC contract (from what I understand).

When I needed to "buy" the one-time points from DVC directly, the rep first asked me if there were kind DVC members I knew who'd be willing to transfer me their points? The members I knew had already used their alloted points, but if they hadn't, I would've bargained a fair trade: if they transfered 24 points to my account, I would transfer 24 points the following use year to their account. This way, no money was exchanged, just good faith (especially because they'd have to wait a full year before more points became available in my account).

17 points would mostly likely get someone a 1-night stay in a studio, if they had access to no other points.

okay I just found this other site DVCbyOwner.com that kind of has listings of DVC owners willing to "transfer" some of their points..
I think I might send you a message.

"Transfers" can only be done between DVC members WITHOUT compensation.

"Point Rentals" can be done between members and non-members for monetary compensation.

I did send you a message though!

...and I, too, have 14 points set to expire Sept. 30, 2012:( Believe me, if I could take a quick trip down before then, I would (that's if any studio was available)! I hate to see points go to waste.

Anyone know if there are charities that you can transfer points to? You wouldn't get cash, but you could help a sick kid or something and get some money back at tax time too.

Wish I would have known about this sooner. My boyfriend and I are going down for one night before my CP and would have loved to stay at a DVC studio. I never knew you could get 1 night at a studio for that little. I'll keep that in mind next time he only needs a one or two night stay in the world since we aren't doing packages at the moment.

Does your company have an internet newsletter or page for employees to contact each other ie. "marketplace"? If so, put a little blurb in about the opportunity to stay at WDW for a discounted rate. Explain that you "own" at WDW and let people contact you regarding reservations.
I had some points I was going to lose last year and posted on a newsletter that is read by a certain group on Long Island. Many of my friends and acquaintances read this each week. As it turned out, one man put his brother in touch with me and I rented an ocean view room to him at Vero Beach.

You may wind up renting enough points for 2 nights in a studio but, it's better to rent out 22-25 points than to lose 17.

so how does Dave's disney rentals work if points can't be bought or sold?

I have not used his service (on either end) but here is how I understand it works.

You need to list him as an authorized user of your contract. That way he can make and inquire about reservations. You fill out a whole load of legal-type forms that state he is only being athorized to make reservations for points you list for rent yadda-yadda.

Now, lets say you have 100 points that you want to rent out. You give him a call (email) and he lists them on his site, along with loads of other points he has from his other clients. Somone wants to resnt some points for a stay. They contact him, he looks in his "inventory" and books the stay. He charges $X per point (it depends on the time frame, points on short notice rent for less). He keeps $2 per point (I think) for his services and sends the rest to you. I believe that he holds the money in escrow as well, acting as a sort of broker between the renter and the rentee. This puts another layer protection on the deal. It also adds some cost, that is how he gets paid.
