How accessible is Uber from the MK resorts?

We are arriving in just over 3 weeks!! (YAY!!) We're staying at Poly. One day we are planning to go to Universal. I would like to take an Uber, but I'm wondering how accessible/easy to use Uber is from the Poly? Can I count on being able to get one fairly easily ~7:30 on a Sunday morning to take us to Universal so we're there for gate open?

Also - we are taking our kids to the pirate adventure leaving from Y&B at 9:15 am on Thursday. We'd need to leave Poly ~8:30 to get there on time - do you think Uber would be available for that too?

Just wondering if I'd be better off reserving a cab...

Thanks for any advice!

I was just in the world July 28 - August 3 and used Uber a ton. You should have absolutely no problem at all with those times! I took an Uber from the Poly one night at 10:30 and it arrived in the time it took me to walk to the front desk from 'Ohana.

I also took an uber on a Sunday morning from my resort to the dentist without any problem. The uber arrived within 5 minutes of me requesting it. Lastly, we took an uber to the outlets and again it arrived within 5 minutes of requesting it.

Basically, there's a load of uber drivers in the WDW resort area and they are predominantly out before park opening and around park closing, but you shouldn't have an issue anytime of day, at least in my experience! If you haven't used uber before, pm me and I'll give you my referral code, you'll get a free ride and I will too!

You shouldn't have any issue. There are always Ubers around. I would also suggest you downloading Lyft. Its the same thing as Uber but just another option to use in case you can not find an Uber.

Sorry to piggy back but I have an Uber question @piglet21 we are staying at OKW, do the drivers come to your building or do you need to be out front of hospitality house? I have also heard that Uber are not allowed past the security gate, is that true and if so does anyone have any suggestions of where we would meet the driver? thanks in advance.

Hi! I've never taken an uber from OKW so I don't know that my information will be completely accurate, BUT, when you request an uber it pings your location to the driver. So if you were waiting outside a particular building, they'd be able to see your location on the GPS. The times I took an uber I walked to wherever the lobby was simply because it wasn't a long walk. They should be able to pick you up in front of your building. You can also send your uber driver a text through the app with your precise location, like "OKW building X".

In my experience the uber drivers were allowed past security, they simply said they were picking up or dropping off so that shouldn't be a problem. I also took an uber to AK where I was dropped off right by the tram.

One thing I don't recommend is requesting an uber if you're not in the general vicinity of where you want to be picked up. If you request and move around, your location ping moves too and your driver might have a more difficult time finding you. You can view their location on the app too, so you'll know when the car pulls up that it's yours. At the end of the ride, the driver will end your ride through the app and rate you from 1-5 and you'll rate them as well. If your driver got you there safely and wasn't rude, give them a 5, a 5 isn't for outstanding service, it's for appropriate service. If an uber driver's score goes below a 4, they get decommissioned. Likewise, you want to get a 5 from them (why I mentioned not moving around), if they have to wait for you or search endlessly for you they will rate you low. Other drivers can see your score and choose to not pick you up if you don't have a high rating!

Lastly, tipping isn't necessary - it's built into the price of your ride. Your driver earns 80% of your fare, but if you'd like to tip it's totally fine! Usually I'll tip a couple bucks if a took a really short ride or if the driver was really awesome (one offered us sealed cold waters after a long day in the parks). I usually let the driver know I will be rating them a 5 when I get out so they do the same for me.

@Gurt and @KLeigh one other thing, make sure your uber driver actually ends your ride when you get to your destination. They do this in their app, most will show you that they've ended it. I've never had a problem with this except for once - the driver kept driving for 2-3 miles after I reached my destination and got out of the car before ending my ride. You can see in your app that the ride has been ended or if it is continuing. I gave this driver a low rating and contacted uber. I was using a free ride so they didn't reimburse me but I imagine they would have if I was paying.

Also, if you guys or anyone else wants a free uber ride (up to $15) pm me and I'll send you my uber code - it's good for an unlimited number of people so long as it's your first ride!

We used Uber several times when staying at Riverside. The driver came to our building and picked us up. He took us to a grocery store and because it was my first Uber trip, I had a 30 mile (or minute?) trip for free. We let him know this and asked him to not stop the trip, wait and then take us back. (we were only planning to grab a few things). He did stop the clock so it would reset, causing us to use the free trip needlessly on a quick trip and then suggested we just pay him cash for the trip back to the resort. It was not the best experience. :( The next time we used it, our driver ended up totally lost somewhere behind the Magic Kingdom and I had to use my GPS to get us back to Riverside.

I would try it again, but I just share as a cautionary tale. :)

I've had much better luck with Uber (5-10 min wait) than I have had with Taxis (stranded at the Contemporary for 2ish hours) on property and would highly recommend them! If you are a large family or have luggage you can request larger vehicles to accommodate as well. Uber saved us getting to a few ADRs on my last few trips and it's honestly such a nice way to arrive - not being all disheveled from weather etc! You can pull up the app and see the estimated wait for pickup - I recommend doing this about 30 minutes before you are wanting to go so you can gauge when you need to request them! Then head down to the lobby area or text your driver your building number etc and wait to be whisked away :)

Thank you everyone for the wonderful advice and cautionary tales  Even the best of services has a few bad apples, and it's smart to just remember that going into it.;) I'm really looking forward to giving this a try!! In fact, I may get so spoiled that I quit using the bus system altogether!!! :joyfull::joyfull:
