I ended up booking thru Southwest a little too late in the game and paid the price. I didn't book till a few weeks ago/Jan.
Big mistake. I really think prices start going up fast around this time. I should have booked back in Dec/max.
I found a half way decent price on the outbound from HOU to MCO. Then I chickened out and paid more to upgrade to a direct flight.
My inbound flight from MCO to HOU was more expensive. I ended up changing that to a direct flight at well!!!!
I am horrified to admit, I am paying around $650 each for my flights. Horrible!
Then, the craziest thing happened. I flew United last year, because I had the miles. Even though using the miles to go to Orlando during spring break is nuts. Much better to use for Europe or South America. Well, I broke down and flew with United miles.
Of course by doing this, I neglected SW last year. Got an email yesterday alterting to the fact that I would lose my miles on 3/14/16. My daughter got the same email (we go to WDW every year together!). I thought "I got this" because my upcoming trip begins on 3/12/16.
Wrong!!!!! I was told by a very polite SW rep that I would not earn the points for the 2016 trip until after travel was complete; thereby losing the points on 3/14.
I accepted her explanation and then I said "who huh!!" something is not right here....called them back and I was in luck, I got Gary the supervisor in Phoenix on the phone! Hello Gary!!!!
He assured me that although my travel did not end till 3/18, because I was flying out on 3/12, it would all be okay. Would not lose the points. Then Gary did something SCARY. I figured this would be an easy way to remember who I spoke too lol. He cancelled my outbound flight and rebooked it. I am telling you, I was scared. I thought: please don't lose my reservation Gary. I told him my daughter is only 14, don't lose her reservation!!
Well, Gary had a plan. By rebooking the 3/12 departured flight, I got a new reservation number and it is completely separate. So, when we travel on 3/12, we reactivate my account and do not lose the miles we have!!!!!!
Good job Gary! The other rep was suggesting I buy miles (min $55 for 2000) or sign up for the SW Visa card (you can't lose miles w/card). I was about to just lose the darn. Thanks to Gary, we have our stored miles for another 24 months.
Really appreciate the great customer service thru Southwest. They are always so polite and helpful. It does not go unnoticed.
United. Well, that is another story. I have talked to some pretty rude people at United. And I have their rewards card.
I will keep checking back on my SW flights. If the price drops, I can change w/o a charge and keep credit.
