Hotels near Universal

My brother and I are taking a trip to Orlando in April. We're already planning to spend most of our time at Universal. We haven't booked our hotel yet, and we're not sure yet if we want to stay on property. We did last year at the Hard Rock and it was awesome, but it was also expensive. We're looking at staying some place nearby that is significantly cheaper, but we don't want to stay somewhere that is not up to par, and consequently ruins the experience.

Are there any hotels near Universal that any of you highly recommend?

I would recommend the Sheraton Studio City Hotel (the big tower on I-Drive). It's very nice/clean, just a few steps away from UO, and you can usually get it for a good rate.

There's the Doubletree and Holiday Inn right across the street from the Main Entrance as well

You could always try the Royal Pacific if you still want to stay on-site, but for less $$$... Royal Pacific is the cheapest of the 3, but it still has a fantastic experience and you still get all of the front of the line perks. :)

Thanks! That's the one we're actually considering if we do end up staying onsite. But even though it's the cheapest, it's still running about $250 a night for two people. My brother said he read that Universal has some sort of partnership with some of the surrounding hotels, and I'm wondering if it's maybe like the "good neighbor hotel" program they have near Disneyland. He said these hotels all offered free shuttle service to Universal. But I was wondering if maybe anyone knew what additional amenities some of these hotels offer, and also what's the best deal.

Thanks! Any insight or information you might have on what these hotels are like, or what amenities they have to offer would be great!

I've stayed at the Best Western Movieland and it was a no frills place. The Clarion Universal is pretty good.

The Holiday Inn across the street from Universal was pretty nice, but the room prices can be as much as a room at the Royal Pacific Resort.

My DD is staying at the Double tree in May, it cost her around $180 dollars for three nights, over a weekend. As a non Driver she figured 11 nights at Disney via Magical Express, Town car to Universal then there to the airport.

The DoubleTree is a short walk. Last April my sister came down for a vacation that overlapped with our vacation and we met up at Universal Studios. She stayed at the DoubleTree and we walked back to her hotel room to visit for a while and then take a cab back to our hotel. It was a really nice hotel and the room dwarfed our small room at POP.

The rooms suck at the Holiday Inn, but the suites are great... and if you're a priority club member (priorityclub.com, free of charge to join), they'll upgrade you from a standard room to a suite at no charge :)

The doubletree rooms are nice and they have a starbucks

Try the Comfort Suites next to the DoubleTree. It's simple, but nice. Pretty new.

You can great deals on their website. Usually around $60 a night.

Thanks again everyone! I'm really leaning toward going ahead and just booking the Doubletree. It really sounds like that is the way to go. Of course, any additional input is always welcome. Thanks again!

That's not a british link, it's the link directly from the front page of universalorlando.com's website.

So why does it give me a Virgin logo and the price in pounds? Have the colonies seen the error of their ways and changed currency, or is it my home baked cookies:)

I don't know because that's not what's on the page when I click on that link. I just get a listing of hotels with this as the header:

When you stay at an approved Universal Partner Hotel you will enjoy special benefits including:
  • FREE scheduled transportation to Universal theme parks daily and to CityWalk nightly
  • Discounts on shopping & dining throughout Universal Orlando
  • Golf reservations and complimentary scheduled transportation to select area courses

I got to the page I linked by going to the main universalorlando.com website and clicking on area hotel options underneath the hotels tab. I have no clue what page you're looking at, but its not the one I'm seeing.
