I am 16 and my first trip to Disney World was mid January 2003 with my high school marching band, and then i went back to wdw with my family in mid august 2003. Anyways, i have heard about a ride called horizons, and i have heard a lot about it on these forums, and today i looked at my friend's old 1999 Epcot map, and that ride was on it were mission space is now. I am very curious, can someone tell me what horizons is all about and what it is? thanks

Horizons

Well this was one of the original rides in the park that opened not long after the park opened in 1981.

The ride was originally presented by GE. It was following a family in the 21st century.

It started by going through history looking at what people had thought the future would look like. Then they showed you what the future "really did look like". This showed a family living in a very futuristic version of a city, the country, under the ocean and on a space station. It was an audioanimatronic based ride.

If you would like to see a video of the ride (it takes a long time to load if you have a slow connection) click below.

Hope this helps, it was my favorite ride.

Horizons was my favorite ride too, and once it again it was replaced to satisfy those thrill seekers . And yet it recieved an 81% satisfaction rate, but Philharmagic, which is by no means a thrill ride, and it got a 97% satisfaction rate, or something like that.

I understand that a lot of people enjoy thrill rides, but I hope that once this whole wave of thrill rides is done that we get to see maybe one or two new that have the classic Disney feel to them, the way Horizons did.

Amen

:sohappy: Amen to that Sister. Enough thrill already. I miss the nice safe have a good time rides. Like Horizons and World of Motion. Somehow they just don't listen to us. :zipit: :brick:

Here we go again. Traditionalists verses thrill seekers. :lookaroun

I too never went on Horizons, so I can't relate to the attachment that is shown here. As objectively as possible, will anyone admit that it became outdated since it was about the future and it was built in 1981? I mean we have made some serious technological headway since 1981, so who has an opinion about it becoming possibly archaic?

Yes that is exactly what horizons was a SE version of the views of the future(ways of life) thru different generations eyes.

And on that note The world of Motion was the same type of ride as both of these and was the views of the history of transportation.

All three of these rides were my favorites now only one stands :-(). Luckily I have videos of them all.

Actually Horizons wasn;'t really outdated. It was a dark ride and you rode sideways, I believe the track was on top of the cars instead of the bottom, like Peter Pan's Flight.
You journeyed through the scenes, and at the end you were in front of a huge screen and got to pick which flight experience, like Desert, Sea, Space, and theree was one more.
The scenes that I really remember was the computerized farming of an orange grove (complete with scent), and the underwater community with the baby seal coming up to the window. Much of what was discussed in the ride still does not exist today.
It was very detailed and fun.

Hey Doombuggie,

When you say you have video's of them all, do you mean you brought a video camera on board and taped? If so, is there any way you could make a copy of Horizon's and World of Motion? Maybe even Spaceship Earth if you have time?

Let me know, I'd appreciate it a lot!

I now believe that every thread could turn into a traditionalist versus 'thrill seeker' rant. I am truly looking forward to the traditional themes of WDW. To be honest, I would not travel all that way if all it had to offer was thrill rides. I have only said that if, if, if, if WDW was to add a park, a Thrill Park would be a nice addition. It would give WDW all that a vacationing family could want for. Was there ever any negative comments before any of the waterparks opened? Such as, why build a waterpark, if I wanted to do a waterpark I would go to a waterpark??

By the way PKI is doubling the size of their waterpark and re-naming it Boomerang Bay. There is another waterpark, called the Beach, right accross from PKI. I sincerely doubt that visitors only go to PKI's waterpark without also going inside PKI itself. (season pass holders not included)

It is all part of the package.

Kramjam33, if you really want to experience what Horizons was all about go here:

http://198.65.141.39/

Then click on Epcot, then Future World East, then scroll down till you find Horizons. There are two wallpapers, a few audio clips, and a video of the ride. I highly reccomend it.

No Horizons did not become outdated. The vision of the future that was portrayed is still what we think of today. Living in space with artificial gravity. Traveling from space to earth for a vacation to see family. Farming in the desert with limited water. Growing vegetables without soil. Holographic communication. Living under the sea and farming the seas natural resources. I don't think that any of that is outdated!

If anything became outdated it was the dialog and the ride maintenance. Also the fact that people no longer want a ride like this or to think of the future in that type of way.

And I am trying to be objective.:)

I am totally with you!! Those were my three favorite rides in WDW. When they were talking about remodeling Spaceship Earth, I threatened to chain myself to that awful wand to stop them from ruining the last one!!

Amen to that, bluesnut! If it were up to me, I would completely renovate Horizons. The ride opens with: "Our final destination, the 21st Century" Last I checked, we're only 4 years into the 21st Century. It'll be here for, say, 96 more years.

http://www.intercot.com/edc/Horizons/index.html probably gives the best description of the ride with the planning, ride descriptions, layout, etc... I do know that Extinctattractions.com is selling a Horizons DVD which includes COP (and as someone mentioned before that Horizons is the sequel to COP). I do wish Horizons would have stayed around. Even though the last time I went on the ride when I was 10, I remember a lot about the ride. It made the future sound really cool (which is what the main purpose of the ride was).

Thanks for the link. What an impressive ride! I'm sorry I never got to see it.
