I live in HK and have an annual pass to Disneyland, so obviously I'm a fan
Catt, you're right, HK Disneyland (as most people know) is very small. It only has 3 lands - Fantasyland, Tomorrowland and Adventureland which is currently being called 'Pirateland' for the summer, to coincide with the Carribean movies. The castle is smaller than other Disneylands as well.
There are quite often very small queues at some rides, notably Buzz Lightyear and Festival of the Lion King (show) and to a lesser extent, Space Mountain. However, others are consistently 45 mins or more such as the Winnie the Pooh ride, Stitch Encounter and Autopia. Chinese people are pretty mad about Winnie the Pooh and other cutesy characters, so that explains the wait there, and Autopia just isn't a very efficient ride in terms of the number of people able to ride at any one time compared with the length of the ride.
Catt, you say you went in April? Each time I've been, the place was full of kids. Particularly during the school holidays of course, but other times too. The middle aged men you speak of are definitely likely to be mainland Chinese rather than HK locals, and yes, you see them riding the carousel all on their own, it's a little bizarre!!
One of the nice things about a small park is that you can manage to do everything in a day, if you plan carefully. It's nice to take visitors for a day because of that, and you don't feel you're frantically rushing around to see everything.
The food at HK Disneyland is often commented on. It's mostly Chinese food - noodle soups, dim sum, chinese BBQ meats, as well as one burger place, the Starliner Diner and one cafe that does 'pseudo-Western', ie western food catering to Chinese tastes. However, I've noticed this summer a few new stands springing up, including a yummy crepe stall, and a stall selling chicken or beef wraps, similar to doner kebabs. VERY tasty.
I can only compare it to Anaheim, which I visited at 13, and only remember it being far bigger than the HK one, so I don't have many insights on comparing HK to other parks.
I love HK Disneyland! So does my 2 year old, and I am going to milk this annual pass for all it's worth before I have to pay for him to get in when he turns 3! LOL
