Hong Kong Disneyland announces that it will open on September 12, 2005, an auspicious day chosen by a feng shui master.
Hong Kong Financial Secretary Henry Tang and Hong Kong Disneyland Group's Managing Director Don Robinson have unveiled a banner showing the opening date at a press conference.
In keeping with local tradition, Disney officials have consulted a feng shui expert in picking the date. Robinson said the expert has assured them that September 12 is a fabulous day to open Hong Kong Disneyland.
Hong Kong Disneyland is a joint venture between the territory's government and The Walt Disney Co., but local taxpayers are shouldering most of the park's US$3.5 billion price tag.
Critics have questioned whether Hong Kong got a good deal. The Hong Kong government has said the boost in tourism and employment the park is expected to bring justifies the investment.
