My sister in law is going to Disneyland.
I know Disney World but Disneyland is very different.

Can you recommend web sites with good help and tips?

Really need one with a better and farther reaching calendar than what’s on the official web site.

If you give an idea of the different times she is considering going people here can give you a general idea of what the crowds and hours will be, and there are certain predictable ride closures for holiday overlays or the removal of overlays, but as the above poster stated, Disneyland doesn't post schedules or announce closures very far in advance.

As far as tips and tricks go, there are about a hundred sites you could go to, or you can give more info here (is she traveling with little kids, how long is she staying, etc.) and get tips and tricks from people here.

Two kids; 1 boy 13 and 1 girl 4

They are going mid October for 5 days (M-F) staying off property.

If it was Disney World, I'd point them to this web site but I don't know of a good and easy to naviagte site for Disneyland.

That is a perfect amount of time. As far as tips go, with the big difference in ages between the kids, I would recommend they use the child swap for the bigger rides the little one won't be able to go on. Also to take it slowly and take breaks from the parks since they will have plenty of time to see and do everything, and it will help avoid meltdowns. They should get fastpasses for Radiator Springs Racers immediately after park opening...they go quickly and the lines are really long. The schedules for character meet & greets will be available before they leave, so they should plan out who they want to see and when. The kids would probably get a kick out of eating at Blue Bayou, which is in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride...they will want to make reservations for that, since it is really hard to get into without one. If cost is an issue, I would suggest they go for lunch so they get the experience for less money.

As far as other sites go, Disneygeek has some good planning tips, and AllEars.net is a really good place to look up all the menus for the restaurants so they can plan their dining.

I would also recommend Disney PhotoPass +. Especially since you are doing 5 days. It you buy in 14-days in advance you get a discount. 69.95 instead of 99.95. It includes a CD with all Photopass photographers photos and on-ride photos from RSR, California Screamin, ToT, Space and Splash mountain. It was a great deal and we got a lot of great photos!
