So hubby and I are hoping we can talk the grandparents into letting us swing a kid-free trip for the first time. We are thinking Jan/Feb. Who likes this time of year and why? What's it like during MLK weekend and are there usually blackout dates as far as specials are concerned around that time? I think we can be somewhat flexible. Thanks, ya'll, for your input.

MLK weekend is not too bad but I would avoid President's day at all costs. Not only do the crowds increase but the resort rates spike.

We were there for several days in mid-January this year, pre-MLK day, and the crowds were virtually non-existent, even with the marathons going on.

You're taking a weather risk, though. That time of the year can be cold, grey and rainy. When we were there, Florida was having some of the coldest days it had seen in decades. It actually snowed in some areas the night before the big marathon, and there was sleet and freezing rain that morning! Then again, you could also get sunny skies and 80 degrees. It's a crapshoot, really, in that regard.

If that doesn't bother you, it's a great time to go.

We've been there the last week in January and it was very quiet. Never waited more than 10 minutes for any ride with the smart use of FPs. Weather was comfortable during the day but cool at night. We wore pants rather than shorts, and we left a light jacket in the lockers to use at night, but that was fine by us. We would rather have cool weather than melt in the heat of summer. But if you like to spend a lot of time in the pool or water parks, this may not be the time of year for you.
