Haven't flown since 2000: What I can't bring with me?

One Lil Spark

In three weeks, I'll be boarding a plan headed to WDW! :sohappy:

The last time I flew was 2000, so I'm wondering if any of you seasoned flying vets could tell me a quick list of normal items that you are no longer allowed to bring/pack on a plane.

Thanks in advance!
Jenn

Now be warned I tend to pack light. But, in general you cant bring any liquids/gels through security. If you do, they must fit in a quirt size zip lock bag. This is probably the biggest change, and the most annoying. There are exceptions for baby formulas / prescriptions that I dont have the best info on. So for example, a bottle of water is out. However, you can purchase a bottle of water after you go through.

Laptops need to be taken out of the bag and put in their own tray. If you dont want your laptop xrayed for whatever reason, you can ask for them to check it by hand.

The gels/liquids thing is the biggest change however. And you have to take your shoes off which is annoying as well.

I don't know about the knife. I do know that I packed regular size bottles of shampoo and conditioner, etc in my check in luggage. I put it in 2 ziplock bags incase it spilled. Didn't want it on my clothes.

May I pack food such as a box of granola bars, fruit snacks, crackers, etc in my non-carry on luggage?

Yep, you can take them in your carry on too. Jenn your best bet is to check the TSA site, they have all the regulations. Be aware that just how strictly they enforce these rules varies from airport to airport even though it shouldn't.

I wish TSA would hire REAL scientists to advise them...because that whole liquids rule is beyond absurd. Anyhow, I always forget to take the plastic bag out of my luggage at Security in both Orlando and New York and have not once been stopped.

I've never particularly understood the reasoning behind this rule. Surely the xrays would still be able to xray the computer if it's still in the bag.

The most ridiculous and illogical rule of them all.

And that is why I said not all rules are enforced the same way. I have taken the bag out & had been told "next time just leave it in there". I have also been told to take it out and put it in it's own tray.
We have always been asked to take the lap tops out of our bags, sometimes turn them on, sometimes not...same with cells phones and mp3 players. Always take off the shoes to be x-rayed (stems from the shoe bomb incident), sometimes belts on, sometimes off.

We have been pulled aside because they thought we were trying to bring goldfish home (in a bag of water) in a backpack...it was just a plastic fish in a bar of soap that my kids got at a craft store.

The bag lining could contain a decoy that blocks x-ray transmission to the actual computer.

Yea unfortunately its pretty frustrating that each airport is a bit different. Some places want to see your ticket again after the metal detectors, some look at you like your a jerk when you try to hand it to them.

The laptop one seems to be pretty consistent. I did see some poor foreign kid get yelled at in IAD for not taking it out of the bag. And I have yet to have to turn it on for anyone....

I remember getting way over OCD about packing those stupid liquids. Good thing is most travel sizes are kosher.

Now, I do pack relatively light and I only take a carry-on (I don't check luggage unless I really have to.) In the past four years I haven't had any problems at the airport...although I did forget to take off my belt and watch last year, which resulted in a "beep" through the metal detector. Luckily I didn't cause a huge backup at security.

All in all...check the TSA website and if you have any doubts about what to bring, you probably shouldn't take it (or at least take it in a smaller size.)

We have flown many times since the new rules have been in place and you would think we could get it right BUT twice my youngest daughter has forgotten perfume in her purse. Once, we found it too late and had to throw it away at the checkpoint (they demanded we toss it, no way was I going to volunteer to do it) the next time we discovered it early enough to put it in the checked bags. :brick: Keep in mind if you have over a 3 fluid ounce bottle of anything and it is past the point were you have your bags that you are going to check then you will have to throw away the stuff. Sad but true. The moral to this story is this, double check your purse before it is too late! (or don't take teenaged kids with you.....just kidding, I love her).

I accidentally left a Tide stain pen in my (clear plastic) backpack. It was pulled off the conveyor in Orlando and I could see it in the bottom of the bag when the agent lifted it up and gave myself a mental headsmack when I realized it. Inexplicably, the TSA agent didn't register it and chalked it up to a machine glitch.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, was the TSA agent who called over the head supervisor on duty and freaked out because of the unticketed ten-month-old with me. He kept making movements to take her out of my arms. (I wasn't going to turn her over like a bottle of water!) Then the supervisor came over, basically called him an idiot and pointed out that my ticket said I had a lap child.

Competence and strictness varies.

I have heard stories about there being an area that you can mail stuff back to yourself if you forgot to check it and you cant get it through security. Now have I seen one yet? No.
