My Mom insists that a few years after the ride opened at Disneyland, that it was a walk through, instead of the buggies. They then added the ride portion. She says she remembers standing and looking over the railing into the dining room. Anyone know? Thanks a bunch.

The doombuggies were there from day one at the Haunted Mansion. Originally the ride was going to be a walk through attraction but because of the success of Disneyland a walk through was just not possible, so the imagineers came up with the idea of the doombuggies. One of the original plans of the Haunted Mansion was that guests would be part of the story of Sleepy Hollow and encounter the Headless Horseman. Another bit of information Pirates of the Caribbean was also going to be a walk through attraction.

That is why Disneyland's version also has more of a walk-through portion than we see at Disney World...with the changing portraits and the marble busts. By the time Disney World wanted its own version of the Haunted Mansion, they decided to incorporate nearly all of the effects into the actual ride. Of course, the fact that the ride building must pass under the railroad at Disneyland attributes to the added effects in the walk-thru area.

Thats true,!!!

With the design of HM at DL form followed function, in the fact that the imagineeres needed to get guests one level lower from the entrance side of the attraction as to pass under the RR track, that long hallway feel is a result of some of that at DL as oposed to WDW where there is no barrier to traverse so you have a more compact entry hallway to the lifts which at WDW are simular to DL, but with one major diffrence, At DL the floor goes down meaning the room lowers and the ceiling stays in place one floor below but at WDW the ceiling raises to mimic this feature, the floor doesnt go anywhere just the ceiling. and at WDW you still have that short hallway to the loading queue
