Haunted Mansion Ballroom, possible spoiler of the effect..

I saw a short clip of backstage of HM on doombuggies.com and I think it shows how the ballroom is done. From the looks of it all the "happy haunts" are above and below the doom buggies (which is why are are so high) the ones on the table are below and the ones in the air are above (like that wasnt obvious but eh..) My theory of it (since the clip didnt show much) is that that room is actually empty and we are seeing the "reflection" of the AAs through the glass. But I still don't get how they look so see through but hey I don't know if that is even how it's done, if anyone has any information on it, PLEASE share :D :D

SPOILER

Yes. That's how it is done. And they appear see through because you are seeing their reflection along with seeing the actual ballroom through the glass. Kinda like when you're looking out a window at night while the lights are off. You see yourself and things outside. But you look kinda see through.

The effect is called 'Pepper's Ghost'. It involves shining a light onto the figurines, which we see the lit up reflections on the glass, which makes the ghostly illusion. It really is a fun effect.

heh, i'd love to be a cast member down there and do something like the old iron armor CM did. I think that would be a lot of fun. My favorite effect, tho, in the haunted mansion has the be the special draperies. The one that, when lit from one side looks like a solid wall, but when lit from the other side becomes transparent as reynold's wrap. I love how they use it in the HM. heh.

The celing in the stretching room. The Technical term is "Scrim". The scrim is Painted to look like a celing and when the lights turn off in front of it and the "lightning" turns on behind it it shows through and the ceiling "dissapears". They also use unpainted scrims that shtrech from the floor to the celing in the Graveyard scene to make it look foggy and to blur the animatronics, making them look Ghastlier (is that a word?). They are also in front of the hitchiking Ghost animatronics that you see right when you enter the tomb, not behind the mirrors.
Hope this helps!

thanks for explaining it. heh. I think that they use unpainted scrim with the candelabra scene as well. But ya, they use the unpainted material to make the scenes seem more realistic. I love the haunted mansion and all it's complexities.

Is that like what they use at the end of Muppetvision? (the holes in the walls from the cannon blast)

I think it is used in Muppet*Vision, since if the light is from one side blah you know, but I think it is.

How are the ghosts at the end of HM done with the mirrors? I know that they are on the other side of the mirror but when light is on the other side of a mirror the image its reflecting is usually destroyed...?

The "mirrors" are what's known as 2-way glass. It has a reflective coating on one side, the side closest to the Doom Buggies. However, with a proper light source behind the glass, you can see both your reflection AND what is being lit behind the glass. The hitchhiking ghosts are on a track and move in sync with your Doom Buggy.

You can learn all the rest of the secrets, including Pepper's Ghost, on that site too!
