Mothers, you wouldn't let your sons grow up to be cowboys, would you? That's how the song goes, anyway.
So why would you let your daughters grow up to be Hannah Montana? Apparently, it's too late for that. Now there's a song that should be on the top of the charts these days.
Given the tween-beat frenzy around the fictional Walt Disney (NYSE: DIS) star, it probably should come as no surprise that "Hannah Montana costume" ranks at the top of the ten most searched-for Halloween costumes for the week ended Oct. 20, according to Hitwise. What started with a Disney Channel series about the daughter of a country music singer trying to hide her double life as a rock-star has turned into a franchising juggernaut that Disney is exploiting to its fullest.
The 2006 Hannah Montana soundtrack went double platinum. Hannah clothes are already the No. 1 tween brand at Macy's, and her new double-CD set that serves as a soundtrack and showcase for the actress, Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus, is reported to have outsold American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson's new album, both released June 26.
Her upcoming concert sold out within minutes, to loud cries of foul from disappointed 'tween fans and their parents. Scalpers have been selling these hottest of tickets for thousands a pop.
As if that's not enough for anyone over the age of 14 to stomach, there's even a Hannah Montana stock index.
Why? A new meaning, apparently, to the accusation that we just don't get our kids. Rest assured, however, Disney does. Loud and clear.
