You know those artists in some of the park gift shops that will draw you a pic of any character you want?
I always see them tracing from another picture.

Have you ever seen one actually draw a character free hand?

Most of the gift shops have regular castmembers who just trace a picture of Disney characters.

The Animation Gallery at Disney/MGM Studios is the only shop where I have ever seen a true Animator.

I havn't been there in a while so I don't know if he/she is even there anymore.

There are also the animators who draw the characters freehand at the Art of Disney Animation (not sure if that applies to your question, but there ya go anyway :D ). Granted, they tried to take that away and folks raised hell.

I was just wondering. I mean, they sell them as hand drawn, but you can clearly see the CM tracing it.

Understand your point, but realize that only specific drawings/poses can be sold. Disney does not allow the characters to be drawn in just any situation and therefore they must draw one of the approved sketches.

And technically if it is drawn by a human, not a copy machine, computer or robot it is hand-drawn - even if it is traced. Now if they were advertised as characters drawn free hand - then you may have an argument.

True. I was not really making an argument, I just did not understand until you put into prospective.
Thanks.

I wouldn't buy one of these pictures.

I could by some tracing paper and a Mickey Mouse Coloring book and do the same thing for a lot less money.

I had a college friend that worked for the animation dept. and did tours back when the "real" animators worked... he did a free hand of Donald and one of Mickey for us when we took the tour, this was back before they changed the animation studios all around... I framed them... he didn't trace anything - it was pure talent - he whipped them up in less than 3 minutes... it was awsome to watch! :) There is some real talent in the "world"! :D

Down on main street, they used to give drawings away. I have SEVERAL at home done by animator Harry Holt. This was back in like 1990. It was in the same building as Tony's.

No problem! By the way I love your avatar. My wife tells me I am weird for having to watch those infomercials when we are at WDW!
