1.) confused the hell out of people

2.) convinced a lot of people to never pick up a guitar

..and lets not even get into the fact that we are only focusing on the left (neck) hand...we wont get into the picking/fingering hand yet ;)

I dont play alot of chords because they sound muddy on bass. Just the ocasional diad or triad....except when I play Tool.

I know all my scales Mr. I Play In A Band! :p Well the important ones anyways.

I think learning your way around the fingerboard is most important...I've done that part and am slowly learning to play with all 5....count em ALL 5 fingers on my fingering hand. :D

I'm getting there Dan...I'm not as bad as I make my self out to be lol.

This is a bit off the subject, but can anyone recommend a good, basic practice amp (say sub $200) that would work for a guitar and bass? I've been meaning to get one, but when I look at all the choices, effects etc., it just confuses my old, raised on tubes, brain.

As long as you remember beadgcf, you should be able to play any scale (even the ones you've never played before).

Yep...

About a practice amp. I don't know if you could get one thats meant for both guitar and bass. I dont know much about amps but Im guessing if you played a guitar through a bass amp you might get a somewhat muddy sound. I'm not really sure...

If your budget is 200 though you could probably afford one of each type of practice amp. My Crate amp cost me 80 bucks on sale at guitar center...and they always have big sales so I'm sure you could find something affordable.

Thanks Josh!

I'm not really up on how they're making them these days, so I didn't know if it would be best to buy two seperate ones or get something that could handle both.

I don't need anything fancy for what I do (just playing around). If you would think anything less than $600 (for example) would just be worthless, I'd spend whatever, but it does seem that there are things available from $60 up.

I'd rather get some advice from someone who's not a salesman, because they can always find some reason why you'd need to spend $1000.

Thanks again!

I have returned!

As a guitar player myself, I have to agree with Dan on this...if you dont' understand how a chord works or how it's put together, you won't go very far in the music world, no matter what instrument you play. You can play guitar, bass, piano, ukelele, trumpet, clarinet, anything...but if you don't it just makes life tougher. Improvisation becomes incredibly difficult without knowing how it's going the next note is going to fit in, and if you know your chords, you'll be able to follow along a lot easier. So just learning the chords ain't gonna help you as much as you think; understanding the theories and construction will push you forward more than you can imagine.

Practice amps....well...most of them are under 200 bucks to begin with.

Your BEST bet..and the fun part...go to your local music shop and sit down with a guitar and try each amp out that fits your price range. You can probobly get a pretty decent solid state amp for about 200 bucks..and it may even be pretty loud :D

Thanks Dan and Rob!

Dan, I'm sure you're right. That's probably the right way to do it. I guess I'm too much of a "guy" shopper. I like to just walk into a store. Grab what I want and walk out. My wife can spend 3 hours picking out a pair of pants. The last time I bought clothes, I got 5 pairs of pants, 6 shirts, 6 pairs of socks and some underwear, and it took me more time to check out than it did to pick them out.

I've got three amps now ranging in age from 20 years to ? 40 years ? old. The way I bought all those was someone said to me "Hey, you want to buy my amp?" I think the most I ever payed was $50 for a huge fender that I used to use in college to jam outside our dorm on nice days. It sounded terrible, but it was LOUD. (I think the longest we ever were able to play without some University people telling us to pack it up was about 40 minutes).

Josh,

Here's a bass line I'll bet you know. This used to be one of my favorites. See if you can figure out what song this is:

B (A string second fret)
B (G string fourth fret)
F sharp (D string fourth fret)
B (A string second fret)
F sharp (E string second fret)
A (A string open)
B (A string second fret)
D (D string open)

Repeat

(I won't tell you the rhythm or you'd get it for sure.)
