Does anyone know where I can find good begginer guitar lessons online, for free? I just got a guitar today, and I will probably mess around with it more tomorrow night.

Just checked it out.. seems pretty good... I'm also self taught. I taught myself with a book, though.

I already knew how to read music.. so I just sat next to a piano, and did the math as to what the hell tab meant... now tab is 10 times easier to me. I've only taken 1 actual guitar lesoon in my life.. and it was only to teach me technique. I've studied some music theory though.. it's strange, since now I can predict how any techno song will go

guitar.com ;)

But my first suggestion...PRACTICE..you'll learn more by just messing around than you will from any lesson ;)

I should have mentioned, dont get disillusioned...it takes a long time to get good at this stuff. If at first you dont seem like you are making progress, keep working at it. Start SLOW...and then as you get more comfortable..speed up.

Calluses are common and hurt...but are also required.

STRETCH...especially your fingers and wrists...and if you cramp up...STOP!! You can cause perminant damage ;)

CHORDS! Learn CHORDS! Dont be fooled or tempted by the all-mighty 5th (aka..the "power chord")...you can turn chords into scales..and scales into modes..and modes into amazing solos...so dont underestimate these.

I know this is going to look like a forign language to you at first..and if i had more time..id really explain an easy way to remember the different chords..but in the meantime...

Those will get you started...

If you get that "itch" to try playing a song..heres a simple chord progression::

(i know...cheese 80s..but here we go)

G Cadd9 G Cadd9 D Cadd9

Repeat :D

Thats like every 80s ballad...poison used it..skid row used it...etc...and it sounds sexy when you get it right :D

No bass is not as easy as one would think!! In the past few months though I've gone from not playing at all because of being frustrated and lazy to playing a few hours every day. The more you play, the better you get and the more addicting it becomes.

Im not sure if you have any musical background prior to this..if so..it would probobly be easier to "dictate" to you where the chords make sence.

Does this make any sence to you::

E F F# G G# A A# B C C# D D# E

If so..we can forge ahead :D

Theres this poster I've seen around at Spencers and alot of diferent record stores that has a ton of chords on it....and they're all labelled nice and clear. Put that sucker up on the wall and you'll be all set. :)

Learning chords is one thing..but UNDERSTANDING them is much better...trust me..

Knowing what notes you are playing and knowing what makes something a Minor chord instead of a major etc....it will open new doors for you.

Thus why i posted that string of letters above..if that makes sence..i can easily show/describe the note structure of a guitar neck and explain how to build chords without ever needing those charts.

Screw chords...thats why I play bass. :D

..and you assume bass players dont play chords?

...and you have to learn the same scales guitar players do...

..and lets not even get into the fact that we are only focusing on the left (neck) hand...we wont get into the picking/fingering hand yet ;)
