Does anyone know anything about guitars? I need to buy a guitar stand and guitar tuner for someone for Christmas. What is a good kind of stand to get? Are the cheap kinds just as good as the expensive kinds? What about the tuners? What are good, quality one's? I'm dumb. Thanks!

My son plays guitar, I'll ask him. He has a Fender, Martin and a Classical guitar. I know Fender is a quality product and you can usually get a tuner at a pretty good price. Do you have a Guitar Center near you?

I've got a very inexpensive stand and very inexpensive tuner, and they both work great for me. Each cost about $15, and I picked them up at my local Sam Ash music store.

I'm old-school, and until a year ago, I did all my tuning by ear, so even that simple $15 tuner is amazing to me.

Did he/she ask for anything special? Does he/she have anything now?

I've been playing guitar since I was but a wee lad... so.. here;

Here's a good stand

And a good tuner

and if I can make some more suggestions. Picks are ALWAYS appreciated by a guitar player.. the more the better (for me, Dunlop Gator Grip .94mm, or Dunlop Big Stubby 2.0mm), as are packs of strings (Ernie Ball 11's are my choice).

Worse case... a gift certificate to a local Sam Ash or Guitar Center would be the PERFECT present.

as for my equipment. The unfortunate situation of being unemployed for nearly 2 months caused me to sell off a good chunk of my gear... I'm down to my Fender Mongrel (ie.. a guitar I made from spare parts).. which is fine, since it's my baby anyway, and no amp of my own... however, I have taken possession of my sisters old Sovtek Head and a Marshall 1960 Cab with 2 blown speakers. Gotta fix that soon.

I was thinking the same thing, but make sure you find out what strings your friend likes. Heavier strings give purer tone, but lighter strings are better for bends and other effects. Everybody has different tastes.

Ernie Ball 11's will destroy any sane persons fingers, Rob must have calluses that are 1/8 inch thick.:lol:

I used to play 12's... till I learned what it's like to have bloody fingertips.

hehe....I right now use custom DR brand 14s. All strings except the high e are wound. I had to adjust the action on my guitars to stop the SEVERE fret buzzing I was getting around the 13th and 14th frets.

My tuner is this lil "guitar works" brand thingie that cost me at most 10 bucks. I hardly ever use the thing (all my other toys have tuners on them as well) so I cant really tell you how well it works.

Guitar Stands...this is where i REFUSE to go cheap (the 6 I use now cost me about 45 bucks a piece). Ive gone thru there personally at an alarming rate..BUT..im also out playing shows and they are getting tossed around a lot. If its for a HOME player...you can get any cheap stand and do fine.

As said above..the BEST gift to give any musician..is a gift certificate to a local music shop. Why? Cuz NO one execpt themselves know what they like/want. I can garuntee you that if you go and buy a set of strings..or some pics for a guitarist..you'll buy the ones he/she doesnt use. Its inevitable.
