This is my first thread starter and I'm going to bring up a topic that I'm sure has been discussed before--The Great Movie Ride? It's one of my favorites--I cry like a baby whenever the montage rolls along and still cower in fear (sorta) during the Alien scene. I love it, I love that it encorporates classics that I hope will never leave the confines of the ride itself, but I DO think it's time for a revamp.

Don't get me wrong--I love the original script and I think it's fun, memorable, etc., but does anyone else think that maybe it's time to update the ride a bit? Maybe add in some movies that have since become "classics" (i.e. Titanic, LOTR, whatever?) and pump up the script so that people can once again enjoy the thrill of the gangster take-over and not be faced with some seriously second-hand-embarrassment moments?

I'd love to get a discussion rolling on this so...what are your thoughts?!

yes i completely agree! they need to add some new add on's.. there a lot more classic movies that have came out. LOTR would be good.. or something different like a disaster movie and things shake around you..anything I like something different

Disney did a pretty good job picking out "Timeless" movies and Hollywood icons that were in tune with the initial concept of the park. I would be overjoyed if TGMR were to get a true extensive refurbishment to the existing ride, updating the AA's and effects, without adding any new film scenes. I absolutely love TGMR and have longed to see it brought back to glory. It's been the stepchild of DHS for far too long.

I think you're right--I don't think TGMR needs additions, necessarily, as it might even venture on too drawn-out for most guests, BUT a lengthy refurb would definitely be wonderful. It deserves it. It started as the center of the park and now it's quite literally hidden! Which is sad :(

It definitely needs a refurb. I think it's a great ride in a lot of ways - some seriously good and elaborate AA's
(the wicked witch for one) and scenes, but a little refurb and maybe a new scene or two wouldn't hurt.
The only problem is which scenes to take out? I wouldn't want to be the one to pull that trigger. Also what kind of licensing issues would they run into if they added, and\or updated a scene..Probably some serious dough associated with that..and we all know what happens when the purse strings start getting tugged to hard...NOTHING! ;)
The movie at the end can be updated with any real issue...

That's my 2 cents... I voted "Maybe a refurbishment..."

I rode it last weekend and I was disappointed. The cyclorama at the beginning that lights up the hollywood sign had so many holes in it the light was bleeding through ruining the effect. And the ride is filthy, the palm trees at the beginning were crusted with dust and in general the ride looked dirty and dingy. I think some updated movies in the montage and a redo of a set or two would e great but an overall cleaning and repainting is desperately needed.

Agreed that the ride needs a clean up and maybe an addition. There have been some timeless movies made in the past 20 years as well! LOTR, Forrest Gump, Titanic,
They should add a few but would you extend the ride or eliminate something? If so what woould you eliminate?

If they were to replace a couple of scenes I honestly wouldn't mind them giving the axe definitely to Tarzan and also maybe Casablanca. I could care less if they got rid of the Wizard of Oz. I personally never cared for the movie but I know that would upset A LOT of people.

Lord of the Rings, and Titanic are NOT a classic movies. "Maybe a 'Night to Remember'"?
You want a classic movie come back in 30 years see if the movie is still remember and relevant.
You throw a few hundred million into a movie does not make it a classic.
If it make billions it is not a classic, it is or was popular.

Forest Gump older movie.... but not all that great.

I can not think of one segment that does not fit, a few need some TLC but the show is cohesive and I can not picture it changing much.

Work needed..
I love this attraction but it could use a new film or two. I think it needs to be updated, seriously.

Wow...I can't disagree with you more on Lord or the Rings and Titanic...uhm..yeah they sunk some money into them...but that's not the point.
I mean maybe we should wait a few years before labeling them classics...but "soon to be classics" wouldn't be a stretch.

And Forest Gump? Come on now....another "soon to be" One of the great actors of our time in an incredibly unique role....even if the movie isn't your style you have to see it's merits..? No?

Tarzan would be a very good candidate for replacement. Definitely wouldn't upset that many movie buffs and it's not that great of a scene.
Casablanca is a true classic, and the scene they choose is pretty iconic, I wouldn't get rid of it.

I am a fan of Wizard of Oz, but regardless if you're a fan or not.. the two scenes are probably the most amazing - well done scenes on the whole ride, and yes some people would be P.O'd! ;)

I think since TGMR is in Disney Hollywood Studios, they should just scrap the whole thing and do scenes pertaining to historical Disney shorts, films, movies throughout time, Make it a historical ride through time. Most if not all of the movies in TGMR are MGM based and Disney is now no longer associated with MGM anyways. Just my opinion and maybe something that seriously needs to be considered by Iger and Team Disney Orlando.

Yeah it needs redone. Sad to say a lot of people in their early 20's like me cant even tell you the names of some of the movies shown in there. Some of the movies showcased in there I love like Alien, Indiana Jones, and...wait they're the only ones I've seen all the way through. So many newer films like Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, The Godfather, even some of the new Marvel Comics films they could do since Disney owns Marvel. Plenty of other movies I didn't mention obviously. I still go on that ride every time I'm in Hollywood Studios but it's time to update.

My personal thoughts on the GMR is that now that the park is no longer associated with MGM it needs a refurb into something also no longer associated. Don't get me wrong... I still enjoy the attraction but it's not changed since the park opened except in very limited areas. Why not refurb it into something specific only to movies that came out of Walt Disney Productions? It can still be classics... things that many folks weren't alive to see when they were first released... there are tons of Disney movies that fit that bill. It doesn't even have to be animated movies. We all know how much Disney loves finding a way to incorporate their characters into attractions... this could be their opportunity for character overload! LOL!

I agree that it could use attention, bring in some newer films, but please leave the Jimmy Cagney area, Humphrey Bogart feature and the western (John Wayne & Clint Eastwood) area/town. These guys are classic. With so many great movies to choose from it would be hard to decide what to bring in by popularity, there just isn't enough room for them all. How about a poll from guests about what they would like to see featured?
As far as highlighting the Disney films, cartoons, ( a great idea by the way ) it would be an ideal thing to put in the now open Drew Carey area.

I would love to see scenes added from Star Wars, LOTR, or Titanic - all of those have some pretty iconic scenes that would be awesome to ride through, and would also bring in new generations of fans. I think the ride is a great concept (especially for us movie buffs), but it's in a pretty sad state - definitely needs some attention.
