Great Movie Ride update?

Will the Great Movie Ride ever get an update? I mean, with new movies coming out all the time and the technology to present them it shouldn't be a problem. Sure, what they have now is amazing but why not add on to it if possible...?

I personally like the big hat but I definately have heard many who don't.

I agree with the Great Movie Ride needing an update. They could keep most of it for the historical aspect of making movies. Once they finish the Motor stunt show it seems like there will be many choices on what to update at the Disney Studios. Here are some of my opinions:

1) Add another ride to the Star Tours area but keep the simulator as the "classic" Star Wars ride. This would keep some continuity with the movies with a "classic" and a new.
2) Change the Indiana Jones show. Either update the show or change it to a dark ride like the one in Japan that I read a lot about on this site.
3) This is where I would update the Great Movie Ride.
4) I would add something of a wild west type. If the Indiana Jones Stunt show was changed to a dark ride then a Western Stunt show would be a great addition. Pluse westerns are a big part of movie history.

I really like the big hat. Personally, I think it's one of the coolest things at Disney. And the location is cool, with it being right there when you walk into the park. But isn't that the effect that the Great Movie Ride was supposed to have? You walk into the park and *BOOM* there's Grauman's Chinese Theater. They probably could have chosen a better location, but I think that they're stuck now.

As far as the Great Movie Ride, wasn't it just closed a few years ago for refurbishment? When they had it shut down, I assumed that they were updating it. If they didn't update it while they had the chance, why would they update it now?

GMR has been 'updated'...
The finale has been changed to reflect a couple of 'recent' big movie releases. However, it has been a few years since they last did this too.

The hard thing to do is find movies that Disney owns rights to, that they can build AA's and the like around.
(Lets face it...what was the last blockbuster MGM put out?)

It's not a dark ride, its a technilogically advanced thrill ride. There's one at Disneyland Anaheim and Tokyo Disney Sea. There are alot of rumors that it will replace the stunt show once Motors opens. You can find a ride video of the Tokyo version here at:

Thanks Imagineer boy :)

It looks fantastic. Of course I don't think it should be an exact copy. It should have it's completely unique story(with the exception of Indiana Jones of course) and twists.

Just a question. Isn't the term 'dark ride' meant for any ride indoors?

I'm thinking that they aren't trying to keep the GMR updated and just keeping it with the Classic Hollywood theme. Obviously they aren't changing things yet, and since most of the movies there are known by all they don't really need to worry about changing them. The ride will slowly develop in to a look in to the great movies of the past, and not the present like it displayed when the park opened.

Ther GMR to me is about classics not about the new movies coming out. It takes a while for movies to become classics and I thinks thats why they should reamain with what they have or update some of the scenes with other classics.

The last thing I want is Armageddon or the Fast and Furious on the GMR...lol

Well the ride takes up a lot of space. I wouldn't mind if it gets gutted in the near future for other attractions, as long as the Theatre Facade remains intact that is.

The Great Movie Ride is pretty much the only attraction having anything to do with "classic" Hollywood, so either getting rid of it or making significant changes to it would probably not be a good idea. I could see maybe swapping out a couple of scenes, but that would be as far as it would go. It is still a popular attraction.

Also, some of the movies in the current Movie Ride aren't owned by Disney or MGM (Alien is owned by Fox, Indiana Jones - Lucasfilm, Casablanca - Warner Brothers).

That is exactly the right idea. Sure, some of the Audio-Animatronic figures could benefit from updated technology. And swapping out a scene or two could breathe a little life into the attraction (personally, I think Tarzan is the weakest; also, if an Indy ride is ever built, I'd be OK with replacing that scene as well). But the concept and execution of the attraction are excellent. As the keynote attraction of the park, it really helps tie together the disparate themes.

Think about it. The Disney-MGM Studios are enormously dependent on non-Disney properties. The most popular attractions, Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Rock 'n Roller Coaster featuring Aerosmith, Muppet-Vision 3D, Star Tours, Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular, the former Superstar Television (why, oh WHY did they get rid of this?!?) and, yes, the Great Movie Ride have almost nothing to do with Disney movies. They are built on classic franchises that, together, form the base of the Studios.

Getting back on topic, what the Great Movie Ride needs most is more consistency in the quality of the tour guide. My last several rides have been hit or miss based on these performances.

I think GMR would benefit from the same kind of refurb we're all talking about POTC getting in the near future... refurb the look and sound of the attraction, maybe change or add a new scene (Tarzan definitely needs to go-Indiana and ________ Tracey could be considered too), and update some of the technology- update the AAs, make that Fantasia scene look a little less dated, and update the film at the end (but leave Sister Act in!!! :D).

The Great Movie Ride is about classics, however they are classics we remember and know about so we appreciate them. But look into the future how many of our kids or grandkids will remember and appreciate John Wayne’s Westerns, or movies like “Singing in the Rain” & “Tarzan”. I personally love the ride but unfortunately I think if there is no updates the new crowds will have no clue as to what they are watching. IMO

IDEA!How about replacing the Tarzan scene with something EVERYONE loves; a scene from Pirates of the Caribbean!!! The movie of course, not the ride. Whaddya think?

My Two Cents....

I would like to see the whole thing redone into ALL Disney Movies, Best Of The Best! Animated and Live! The MGM part of the park, I could live without.

I like the big hat when I was there when it first came out. But dang its time for it to go. As for the Great Movie Ride it definately needs an update.
