Great Movie Ride rehab / redo

Okay,

If this has already been discussed please don't slam me too hard, but I just had a thought that maybe the reason for placing the giant Mickey hat in front of the GMR (other than having no where else to put it) was because it might play a direct part in the future of that ride.

I seem to remember a rumor about the ride being redone in '02-03, and this rumor mentioned a ride using the CAVE technology in which Mickey had to escape from a great number of adventures. I assume for this they would scrap the entire facade of the building.

So, the thought crossed me that maybe the reason for placing the hat in this particular spot was so when the 100 yrs. celebration is over they could extend the queue line for the new ride out under mickey's hat, making it the entrance? I haven't been to WDW since they have had the hat completed, so I don't even know if this would be possible. just thought I'd post it up for comment..

I received a response from disney when I emailed they about it and they have told me numerous times that they have no intention of removing it and that it is here to stay. I believe this is a very good thing because it is one of my favorite rides and I would really miss it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D :slurp: :sohappy: :sohappy:

Well, if they do decide to keep it, they really should update it. Its pretty out-dated. They still say that movies made in 1989 are "today's latest!" I do like the ride, but I think that parts of it have become rather bland. Unlike classic rides like the Haunted Mansion, the GMR is one where it matters how outdated it is.

They said the same exact thing about Carousel of Progress, Mr. T's wild ride etc...

So dont get your hopes up. The last thing I want to see is tGMR go but...Disney does what they have to do. Supposedly they take guest poles on these things...if thats true they must be asking all the Six Flags and Universal nuts rather than the Disney nuts. :(

I dont understand whats outdated? It's got classic movies...I really wouldnt want to see it loaded w/ all new movie sequences. An extension would be great though!

This ride has been on the Axe list for a while actually...planning was in full force about a year ago for a replacment...but I think that with the current state of the Disney budget...it's been put on hold for a bit. Star Tours 2 will be the next "big" update to the park, and that will have to last a while...

The Great Movie Ride is full of the World's Greatest films.

They probably don't update because it would be too big of a hassle to put another studio's movie in. Only thing I can think of is like a Sixth Sense or Armageddon scene because they are tied with Disney.

I think it's fine just the way it is.

I wouldn't mind if they re-did/changed/added new scenes. I really like it the way it is, but it would be nice to see somthing new.

Hey, I wrote about this over on the Imagineering board, and basically added three scenes onto it, and still was able to use the same building without adding and removing. Only scene that was removed-The tarzan scene...And the movie montage was still included at the end! Check it out over there, I made an entire MGM fixer-upper list

I would not expect to see a major rehab of GMR anytime soon. Over the last year, many small changes and enhancements have been made to the ride. They have put a good deal of money into redoing lighting schemes, fixing some small problems, and enhancing parts of the Alien scene. I have more details in one of the old threads, if you want to go back and read it... I'm too tired to write them again now. :)

one of my former roommates from FL was an engineer and he was working on increasing the effiency of the ride. I do not remember what exactly he was doing but it was interesting to me at the time.

I currently work in Area 4 of MGM. The GMR is going to be up and running with out changes for at least 2 more years. The Star Tours Rehab is really a pipe dream right now, due to the insane cost of Simulator maint. So look for that around (hopefully) 2004-05 .The big hat as of right now is only temp. but so was the hand at epcot, so it's future is based on guest reactions. Really there are no major plans lined up until after the 100 years of magic celebration and those are really nothing major.....
