Going to Disney with some one on Dialysis

Hi there,

Been to Disney dozens of time but my father is retiring soon and has been in declining health for a long time. He is finally retiring and after many years of begging him to come to Disney (they cater to people with disabilities, I promised him!), well he finally agreed to come for a week long vacation in Jan/Feb. However, this year he started dialysis and we will need to take him to get Dialysis done 3 times a week.

Has anyone ever gone to Disney with some one who has been on Dialysis? My father said it takes about 4-5 hours and afterwards, he is so tired he usually takes a 4 hour nap.

My concerns are:

1) I understand there is only so many machines. Were you able to get a really early appointment time (like 6 am?) I figure if he starts at 6 am he will be done by 11am and after nap be ready to go at 4pm to at least join us for dinner....or were you only able to get an appointment at noonish? etc.

2) Was the person on Dialysis able to rejoin you at the park that day at all? My dad says he will be pretty tired even after his nap. I was wondering if you would think it would be too much for him if we pushed him around in a wheel chair.

3) Would it be better for him to get dialysis later in the day...that way he can join us in the morning then get Dialysis done in the afternoon/noonish time....or will that be too much too?

My father has had multiple strokes and surgeries in the last 5 years and can't enough oxygen to his body to keep him walking too long as is...to give you an idea of what kind of health he is. I don't mind if he needs to rest those entire days, I do not want to push him but I want to have the most of his vacation is all. And this may be a person by person case too...or a day to day kind of thing. I.E. Might feel good enough one day and not the next time....

If it helps, he said he is on the "like largest Dialysis company" in the U.S. insurance group for Dialysis. He is not picking up so I cannot confirm the company but said it began with an F. Quick google search - fresenius.... did anyone use them on their trip?

Thanks....

I would have to agree with RonAnnAbor on this one.

We went through the dialysis process with my Mom until her passing a year ago. She was on hemo-dialysis for about 4 months until converting to home peronital dialysis and it was like what your Dad has described, very tiring.

Talk with your Dad's dialysis provider on what they have available in the Orlando area. We were told it is was okay to travel to other cities as long there was advanced planning for scheduling purposes. It does take approximately 4 hours 3 times a week, and they are wore out from the procedure. You also have to consider the transportation logistics.
