Getting around WDW and around the outskirts

I will have a car for the week I am there in December. How difficult is it getting around? Is there one certain road that is the best and leads off property to where a large group of grocery and fast food places are?

There are two main stretches of stores, restaurants and gas stations near Disney property.

The first is US Route 192. Get on World Drive (the main north/south road in WDW) and head south. When you get to 192, you can go in either direction to find stores. Head west to find a Publix supermarket that isnt' too expensive. Head east a couple of miles to find a Target and maybe a Walmart. Avoid the first stores that you come to when you first leave Disney property, as they're usually the most-expensive.

The other is State Route 535/Apopka Vineland Rd. Head east on Buena Vista Blvd (the main east/west road that runs from the All-Stars to Downtown Disney). Buena Vista becomes Hotel Plaza Blvd near the Marketplace. At the far end of Hotel Plaza Blvd you come to a stoplight. There's a grocery store and a few restaurants immediately across the street, but there's also other stores if you turn left. But be aware that these stores are a bit more expensive.

My suggestion would be 192. But, you also want to limit your driving on 192 as much as possible, because traffic and the traffic lights can be a pain.
So if you're confident with your ability to read and follow a map, I'd suggest going onto Google Maps. Look for a road called "Sherberth Road". It's a "side entrance" onto Disney property from 192 (used mainly by locals and Cast Members), and it comes out onto Osceola Parkway near the Animal Kingdom Lodge. Sometimes when I visit I stay with a friend that lives down the road in Davenport, and I use Sherberth Road exclusively to get on and off property, while avoiding some of the worst parts of 192 traffic-wise.

Yep 192 heading west is a good bet. I'm not as familar with 192 East, but I used to find there was more shopping on the west of World Drive than east.

Your closest Publix to World Drive might be the one just off 192 (heading west) on International Drive. Look out for a Walgreen's on your left just after you pass under the overpass for 417. Turn left at the light and Publix is just on the right.

The Target is further down 192 on your left. For a reference on Rob's google map, look for Lake Cecile where 192 makes it's first big curve turning South. It's across from that. For a WalMart continue down 192 and you'll see it on your right. For a map reference it's on the next big curve in 192 as it turns back to the west. If you want a dose of shopping reality, continue just past the WalMart on 192 and you'll be in the core of the 'real' city of Kissimmee.
