Getting a good room at WL

we are staying at WL in early December 2016 - any tips on what to ask for to get an awesome room? Will Disney ever provide a "complimentary upgrade"? Also, we are a family of 3 including my 3 year old son - I read somewhere that we won't be able to book a room with a king-size bed bc of occupancy, anyone know if that's true?

It all depends on what a good room means to you. You can do online check in and specify come items like near elevator or higher or lower floors and so forth. Our first trip to WL we were upgraded out of the blue so it can happen. Many of the woods view rooms now have views of the MK.
You can also send a specific request when you are less than a week out and if it can be granted they will try. Last trip I requested a certain room we had for anniversary trip once before, they could not get it but gave us same room one floor below! Google the contact for WL, I cannot find it now on where I sent the request to.

That's just my experience.

All Disney rooms are "awesome", containing beds, washing and bathing facilities - if you're talking about an awesome view, then that's something you pay extra for

These are getting to be a thing of the past. Unless somebody has made a mess with the rooms allocations, or they're over-subscribed then I'm afraid you'll get what you paid for

Thanks for the advice! Was hoping for higher floor with view of MK. First time staying at WL.

Things are all messed up now with available room locations/views, what with half of the resort building closed due to the DVC conversion. We've stayed there something like seven times, and although I've never requested a specific location, we've been upgraded without asking several times. This past August had the 6th floor facing the courtyard/pool up over Artist Point. The only real bad view can be the standard view which could face the loading dock. Had that once, and I can tell you that they do get deliveries quite early in the morning!

This us true, since the room occupancy limit for king bed rooms is 2. It would have been allowed if your child was less than 3 years old, since he could have slept in a pack and play. You will need a room with 2 Queens, or a bunk bed room.

We have always asked and obtained the same room, I asked on phone and later called in person to confirm, although they said they couldn't "promise" they came through for me. We have two children and the bunk beds were awesome full size twin beds which kept them separate and happy. Each bed has a little reading light which makes it rather cozy. ;) Think you can request two things, like view, room itself and beds....I always asked for room which happened to be courtyard facing anyhow, and those bunkbeds. :) Enjoy....it is beautiful at Christmas....and the soundtrack is wonderful too.;)

Sometimes you can fax in a room request (it still works though some will tell you they don't pay attention to them anymore) and ask that if possible you be placed in a certain area. Otherwise, I don't bother because every room is fine and I'm only really in it for sleeping and not much else.

Looking out of your room's window and getting a specific view at WL is not very critical. Certainly not worth spending extra money on (unless you've got it to burn). The rooms are all great, same accommodations. The resort is not so huge that any part of it is undesirable. I tend to enjoy the interior of WL more than the exterior anyway. Given the way it is laid out, I'd ask for upper floors. That shouldn't cost you more (except concierge which is nice but you pay for it) You already get the majestic lobby view coming in from the bottom, having it from above is quite nice too.

Other resorts, room location is more critical. This one definitely is not.

We have got an upgrade every single time we stayed at WL. It seems to me you have a better shot of an upgrade if you don't do online check in.
That's tru as some upgrades are last minute. We have done online check in 2 times, once at the Lodge, once at Yachtclub. Both times have been screwed up with no room being made ready for "automatic notification". I don't trust their on-line check in and have found it to be a waste of time.
