Gate check

Just wondering how gate checking works. I'm not even sure if I got the term right! We want to bring the stroller with us through the airport (its a light weight one) and was just curious how it all went down. Does it cost like it does to check your bags? I'm assuming they just take it right before you board the plane? Any info would be great!

I don't think there's any extra charge, but check with the airline on that.

You take the stroller [they'll tag it at check-in] with you down the ramp and just before boarding the aircraft you leave the stroller and they store it with the luggage. When you leave the plane, it'll be waiting for you as you exit the plane.

And just a note about de-planing...

Don't expect the stroller to be there RIGHT when you get off the plane if you're among the first people off. It takes them a couple minutes to get them out of the hold. (There have been many times that I've been trying to leave the plane and have to practically push my way through the mass of people standing in the jetway waiting for strollers and other gate-checked items to be brought up...)

And as a courtesy to others, carry the stroller up into the terminal before unfolding it and putting your child in it. Just like people who do it right after they step off the bus, it needlessly blocks the way for others who are trying to exit behind you.

Thanks for the info! I'll be sure to remember that bit about not unfolding it right away. I'm sure people don't really think about it but you're right, I've been stuck behind people doing that as well.
