I heard somewhere that if you stay put in the stretch room after the lights go out, you hear the gargoyles whisper something. Is this true, and if so, what do they say?

I don't know if it's the gargoyles, but it's true that there is whispering. Ricky Brigante included a recording of it in one of his recent Inside the Magic podcasts. I personally couldn't make out what they said but if you want to hear it for yourself you can download the podcast at the following URL:

Very cool audio. I couldn't make it out from the recording either, but it sounds like it could be audio from the new bride or Little Leota.

I was actually going to open a new post about this subject, but you beat me to it.

I recently noticed that if you're among the first to walk into the stretching room, there is a hissing or whispering sound. When you look up to identify the source, you make eye contact with the gargoyles. It's not 100 percent clear that's what is making the noises, but its a good guess, and I imagine that uncertaintly was the Imagineers intent.

The excitement over gargoyles being "brought to life" came from a Disney article quoting the Imagineer who worked on the audio.

That Imagineer basically added 5 new features in the stretch room: the 3D sound, the creaking walls, the bat sqeaks, the extra bass in the lightning and crash, and the gargoyle noises.

To that Imagineer, being able to add those new elements without destroying the overall experience is a very big achievement that he should rightfully be proud of.

But looking at the big picture, they are very very subtle additions.
In hindsight, it probably was not a good idea to mention the gargoyles and the bats in the article, because it raised expectations that could not be met. To publish in promotional materials that gargoyles come to life and bats fly around leads you to believe the effect is going to be a big deal, when in reality its only a few aduio squeaks.

I remember in early Everest writeups Imagineers describing that the trains would zoom through "icy cold caverns", and I assumed it would be something like the Test Track cold room. In reality, Disney merely put standard air conditioning in the mountain's interior.

Haven't been on the attraction since it re-opened, but I LOVE the new sounds you can hear in the room. It makes the room soooo much better in my opinion. Even if they are minor changes to the average visitor, to us the make a world of a difference.:D

Got to love the detail the imagineers can still produce.:sohappy:

Both me and my roommate went on the ride and we both stayed on seperate times to be the last out of the stretch and from what we heard you can hear (quite creepy if you ask me) what sounds like kids saying "get out while you can" "stay together, stay together" "get out now". Kinda creepy but very cool. :slurp:

You are off on this…..Everest DID have “icy cold caverns” when the attraction test previewed to Annual Passholders in January 2006. I remember the first day of previews quite well, it was a crisp, cold, and clear day, and when you arrived atop the mountain and made your way through the first cavern just before the broken track, you were whizzed through an icy cold spray/mist effect. It was a very unwelcome sensation in the windy cold air of that January day, but it is certainly missed when one ventures the summit on a humid, sticky hot Florida summer day!

I didn't take the new creepy whispering in the new stretch room as the gargoyles......but it does make sense to credit the effect to them. They certainly look much more vibrant and polished than they did pre-refurb.

I didn't like the creaking sounds. the stretch is not supposed to be obvious, supposed to make you think "Is it or is it not". The creaking sound says "Hey the walls are moving."
