Apologies if this is posted in the wrong place.

Ultimate Orlando Challenge: Sunday, May 15th, 2005

This Walt Disney World game is a face-to-face event in the spirit of Cast Member scavenger hunts / trivia / puzzle-solving quests. For the moment, this one is also a completely free event! However, due to the nature of the event and the need to have enough packets for players, registration is required. Email to me the names of the two players on each team: challenge@ultimateorlando.com. You heard that right: teams must consist of EXACTLY two members. No more and no less.

I’m hesitant to reveal too many details about this one, but it’s much more in the vein of the games I’ve done in the past at Disneyland (I am the original creator of MouseAdventure: http://www.mouseplanet.com/mouseadventure/). There may be things like a scavenger hunt, or a timed race, or trivia to answer, or knotty logic puzzles to solve that tell you to go find an obscure detail you might otherwise have never noticed. It’s a fair bet I’ll make you go somewhere and count something tedious.

The Ultimate Orlando Challenge #1 will be held in Disney’s Animal Kingdom on Sunday, May 15, 2005 from 1 to 4 PM. Please note that this is likely to be a brutal time of day, as summer inches ever closer, but I have some plans to minimize player fatigue and heatstroke. I’d rather not go into details just yet, but you won’t be crisscrossing the park over and over again. Also, this may be obvious, but you’ll need your own Annual Passport or ticket to enter the park that day.

Once you register, you’ll receive more information about where to meet, what to bring, and so on. So send any questions you have, or just register the names of your two players at challenge@ultimateorlando.com.

It promises to be enormously fun, a great community builder, and it's even free. I’m assuming we’ll just have light participation – it is the first event, after all – but don’t let that stop you! You have nothing to lose, and some Disney books to win as prizes if your team places in the top three. Hope to see many of you there.

Welcome to the boards Kevin! I was reading about that in your article today...looks like fun. Too bad I won't be there to participate.

Yeah, that sounds like a great time. Too bad it's at DAK, the one park which I barely know (probably because I don't get over to DAK that often, I usually end up in Epcot).

Thanks for the welcome. I've actually lurked for a while. This is a hopping board!

Knowledge of DAK is really not required to do well in this event (let alone just going to have fun!)

Hmmm...

I dunno...

At the risk of getting myself into trouble here, I have to say something. Kevin Yee seems to hate Disney's Animal Kingdom. He has written several Miceage articles, including his current one, that have been less than complimentary towards this park. His writings have shown an open disdain for the park and its message ie. conservation as "annoying and preachy." Maybe because I love this park and I am a Cast Member there, I am a bit one sided? But, none the less, I find myself questioning why Kevin Yee would have a contest in a park he clearly does not view as quality one.

Besides, and I don't want to be mean here but, how good of a contest will this be if he doesn't know the difference between Connie-a-sarus and Chester Diggs?

Don't get me wrong, I read what Kevin Yee writes just as I read what Jim Hill writes, but I view them both as one in the same: a lot of opinion and emotion and very little fact. Just as I would not take one of Jim Hill's tours, I wouldn't join Kevin Yee's contest. And again I question why Disney's Animal Kingdom when he holds it in such a poor light?

As I said, I know I'm stepping into trouble here, but I had to get this off of my chest! I love my job and I love my park!

No trouble at all! The truth is that I love a good debate so long as everyone stays civil.

I can't tell objectively how my articles come across, but I can tell you I don't hate DAK. I dislike the choices Joe Rohde made in two ways (the wrong kind of realism in Africa/Asia, and the garish carnival in Dino-Rama), but there are things I quite like about the park too, and have said so online.

This Challenge I'm putting on will not be critical of DAK in any way. On the contrary, it will point out many of the small, hidden, delightful details that visitors - even frequent visitors - often miss.

As for Chester and Hester, you should see the emails I'm getting on this one! I just plain messed that one up, and plan to carry a correction in next week's article about the origin of the Diggs characters and the real names of the rubberheads.

Oh WOW, I wish I could be there for that!! I would love to play!!

I'll probably offer two of these a year, and I'll give some more advance notice next time! I know that two weeks is really not enough time to plan a trip.

Try for mid-august (haha). That's when I would be there.
