Free Dining is usually August/September. If you eat lunch and dinner on Disney Property, the dining plan will usually save you money. Loads of money if you pick the good spots to eat. MOST CERTAINLY RECOMMENDED!

The Dining plan normally costs 37.00 per person per day. It is worth it if you plan to eat sit down meals, it is not worth it if you plan to eat fast food and counter meals. It is NOT a freebie...the last two years they have offered it for "dead month" (i.e. late august to late September) to bring in a few extra people -- it isn't a "regular thing". I think they tried it last year - bumped up their numbers a bit, and offered it again this year to see if it bumps up their resort reservations even more. What seemed to happen last year was that there weren't really all that many more people there during dead month - but everyone seemed to have the free meal plan and all the restaurants were booked solid. I was surprised they offered it again this year to be honest - we'll see if it is there next year. You should definately NOT plan your vacation around hoping a free meal plan will occur again next fall -- other times of the year there are plenty of resort guests so they have no reason to offer the free meal plan. You can read all the full details about the meal plan by a) searching this forum; b) reading the meals and dining section of this website; or c) going to waltdisneyworld.com and reading all about it there.

Actually this year the Free Dining struck a HUGE high. The goal for booking was blown away. I would expect to see it again next year.
