Free dining offer question

We are doing a cruise with my sister and her family end of October and looking for a few days afterwards at the parks. We are thinking of staying on property if they have the free dining option, never done the dining plan before, but the question is that they will be staying at a deluxe hotel, we cannot afford that, but if they get free dining and we stay at a value hotel, can we upgrade from a quick dining plan to a Disney dining meal, so that we can plan our meals together? Also another question, we currently have Disney tickets, so how many days do we have to purchase to get the dining plan. I heard at least 2, but not sure.

Number of ticket days can vary with the offer, you won't know until it is released.

Yes, you can upgrade from the free quick service to any of the other plans by just paying the difference in price.

Thanks, that is what I was hoping, should I book the room now and if free dining is offered, get the tickets needed and add dining then?

thanks, will do. We know we are going. I have free housing outside Disney from a friend who has a retirement house nearby we can use anytime, but this is a different visit completely and they are staying on property and using the EMH and we want to spend the time with them. They have 3 small kids. The only thing that scares us is that my wife is in a wheel chair and this will make 7 and not sure how that will go. So confusing sometimes for something that should be so easy. Thanks for the help. it does help

Usually with the upgrading of the dining plans from quick to regular plan, it's around $300 for a family of 4. When checking numbers, it was actually only $60 more to stay at a moderate resort with the free regular plan than staying at a value and upgrading...make sure when it comes out you check the numbers...
