Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are expected to reprise their roles.

“A sequel to the 2003 body-swap comedy Freaky Friday is in the works at Disney with Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan expected to reprise their roles. Elyse Hollander is penning the script to the sequel.

Lohan and Curtis starred in the 2003 pic as mother and daughter who wake up one Friday having swapped bodies.

That film was based on Mary Rodgers’s 1972 novel, and grossed $160 million globally. Rumors a potential sequel began percolating earlier this year as Curtis hit the awards circuit for her Oscar-winning work in Everything, Everywhere, All At Once, where she often said how she would like to reprise role and that their had been talks with Disney to do so.”

Disney has announced the Freaky Friday sequel will hit theaters in 2025:

Edited to add more details:

Other returning cast members from the original film include Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao.

They are joined by Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons, Manny Jacinto, and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan.

The film is directed by Nisha Ganatra.

The producers are Kristin Burr, Andrew Gunn, and Jamie Lee Curtis, with Nathan Kelly, Ann Marie Sanderlin, and Lindsay Lohan serving as executive producers.

A sequel to the beloved 2003 film with a multigenerational twist, the film picks up years after Tess (Curtis) and Anna (Lohan) endured an identity crisis. Anna now has a daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice.

I haven't kept up on Lindsay Lohan after her various legal problems were publicized, but as of a decade or so ago she looked and sounded like a highly tenured chain-smoking cocktail waitress in Reno.

Not a highly tenured Las Vegas cocktail waitress, but a highly tenured Reno cocktail waitress.. There's a huge difference. 🧐

What has Ms. Lohan been up to lately? And what role will she play in this movie, if a gruff lady butcher or a highly tenured Reno cocktail waitress isn't in the plot?

She reprises the same role she played in the 2003 remake. The character was an aspiring musician, so would assume it would continue that.

As a.woman of a.certain age (and JLC is a coup!e.years older than me)...what exactly would be wrong with that??
Because Lohan was an undeniable movie star and poised to be The Next Big Thing in 2003. Curtis was coming off back to back bombs with the Tailor of Panama and a terrible Halloween sequel.

He work in recent years has been fantastic. She stole the show in both Knives Out and Everything. But it is an unpredictable career trajectory, especially given where things were in 2003 (my point).
