Anyonw know if an umbrella stroller is a permisable carry-on item? We've never flown before. I plan on having a carry-on bag for me, DD, and DW, as well as the stroller. Can we do this?

Thanks...

I don't think so, I think a stroller doesn't meet the measurements allowed for in-cabin storage, but you can "gate-check" strollers.

EDIT: Gate-check is where you tag the stroller for special handling and you can take the stroller [with your kid in it] up to the jetway going onto the plane. Once there there are staff that will take the stroller [after you've removed the kids :p] and store it in the luggage compartment. When you land, they'll return it to you in the jetway as you get off the aircraft.

You can take your stroller right to the plane. It will be waiting for you in the jetway when you get off!

We're flying Southwest, and I actually was reading their guidelines on this yesterday. Southwest says if you bring a stroller and one other item like a Pack-n-Play or something like that, those two together count against the carry on bag amount. But we only have the stroller and a small diaper bag, so that won't matter for us. You may want to check with your carrier to see their exact guidelines regarding if they consider the stroller against the number of items you can carry on.

I'm planning to bring a regular size stroller this trip for our 11 month old son at the time of the trip. Anyone know if you can gate check this too? All the info I have found so far are about gate checking umbrella size strollers.
Thanks!

Yep, you can gate check a larger stroller too. We did it a couple of times when the kiddo's were little. Same procedure where you get a tag at the boarding gate counter, use it all the way down the jet way to the doors and leave it there. It'll be waiting at the plane door when you get off the plane.

We, too, have flown several times with various strollers in tow: from an umbrella, to a light-weight, to a double-tandem. Just a heads up: because the on-the-ground crew is under a time crunch, they are not always "careful" with items left for gate-check...especially if it's a heavy item. For example, our double stroller's cup holders were busted off twice, and we had to replace them; and my sisters' jogger-type stroller's back wheel got bent. If you can remove any external pieces from your stroller, do, or better yet, get a stroller bag (you can find all sorts of sizes and prices online nowadays). Oh, and it doesn't hurt to label your stroller (we've used a luggage tag in the past).

When you get to your gate, ask the desk attendant for a "gate check slip." When it's time to board, it's easier, and nicer for the rest of the people around you, to have your stroller folded up before walking down the jetway. Then, you simply leave your item at the end of the jetway, right before you board the plane. After the plane lands, I like to wait until most of the guests have cleared before getting off the plane for two reasons: it gives me more room to maneuver my belongings and family down the aisle without disturbing others, and by the time we get off the plane, our gate-check item is there waiting for us and not the other way around;).

Another food-for-thought, renting strollers off-site?:) Because I like my DD3 to ride in her carseat on the plane (it's familiar and she's too tiny for the airline seat belts to fit properly), I prefer to just rent a stroller. By the time we arrive at our resort, the stroller is there waiting for us! And, it's one less piece of "stuff" to drag down with us!

I have never had an issue getting the stroller gate checked. Just roll it right up to the plane door and drop it off there. It is waiting for you when you get off the plane (which is usually last for us, since we have our kid and all the stuff).

Make sure you get the gate check tag. We were flying recently and there were other families on that flight. One was a set of grandparents, their daughter and granddaughter (8 mo old). They got off the plane at the same time as us. As we were gathering our stroller, I heard the grandmother say that the diaper bag was missing. I then heard her say to one of the FAs that the diaper bag was gate checked, but wasn't there. Her husband said that they had not procured a gate check tag for the diaper bag. The FA said then there was basically no way to track where that bag was. The last I heard was the grandmother freaking out, saying all the baby stuff (diapers, etc) was in that bag.

Now why you would gate check the diaper bag is beyond me. That stuff stays with me.

However, it is a good lesson that you should always make sure that you get a gate check tag on your stuff and that they give you the "receipt" portion of it.

We fly southwest with our umbrella stroller all the time. When you arrive to your gate, get an attendant to tag it. You will then carry it to the plane with you. The stroller will not fit in the overhead, so they will gate check it for you. When your flight lands, it will be waiting at the terminal for you, right when you get off the plane. :) No worries!
