I'm in a strange situation where i actually have to change my residency and get my car registered in Florida as soon as my CP starts on August 2. If anyone who currently lives in Florida can give me any info on car taxes, registration fees, emmisions, and safety inspections, I would love ya for it!

Thanks, Mike

Taxes & Fees: I pay 73/yr for my FSU tag. I think normal ones are 40

Emissions & Safety: Not sure there are any... there arn't any up here and i dont think Orlando has any either. When i registered my car here, the tag office never even looked at it... i just stood in line for 40 minutes, paid 73$ and was done :)

Sorry, I have a new version of Microsoft Office on my computer and I'm having some problems printing things in this forum.

Make sure if it's for college reasons you want to get your car changed, that after that one year you'll be older than 24, since until you are 24 you still have to claim your parents income on you financial aid stuff, even if you aren't claimed on their taxes....stupid I know...

Thanks for the warning, but it's actually for reasons other than college. I just graduated this summer and decided to do the college program before i start a career anywhere. I will have to change my residency to Florida because my current home in Virginia is moving to Colorado, and it wouldn't make sense for me to do the same!

Hmm...i'm a little confused (it's also late and I just got done working) why would you want to establish residency when you won't be here permanently though? Or will you be here after your College Program? FYI too: You don't become an "Official" Florida resident until after 1 year of living in the state.

eh? I thought i was a full FL resident the day i moved here and transfered all my registrations. Now for FL residency rates with the Universities may be different, but im sure as soon as my DL said "Florida" on it i was considered a resident :)

There's a chance i might stay in Florida after my college program, especially if i get a professional internship. Once i leave Virginia i have no choice but to change my residency because my family is leaving also, but they are going to Colorado. It just doesn't seem to make sense to change to CO since i will never be living there.

At Valencia when I registered, I was told to be considered a Florida Resident you had to be living in the state for at least a year. I was charged out-of-state fees for the first year.

I believe you are supposed to register your vehicle, etc within 90 days of moving here. I did this in 2004, but I didn't have much choice, since my PA tags (registration, state inspection & emissions) were going to expire anyway. They wack you with fees the first time, but after that, it is less, around $40-50 (my renewal should be coming soon). I have a vanity plate, but it's a regular FL tag, since you have to pay a fee every year to get a "fancy tag" (like napnet), instead of one time (like you do in PA, for example). I think it cost me around $180.

The DMV office in Kissimmee is open on Saturdays, just get there early!

My fiance had to have all of her stuff done within 10 days of moving here. I think her total was something like $180 after registration and plated and whatnot. Other than that, I don't think there's any other fees!

Yeah, the reason colleges have that 1 year rule is so that people living off campus cant claim in state residancy for tuition purposes only.

Do you know why she had to have all her stuff done within 10 days??

Read the link above I provided:

"In the state of Florida, a motor vehicle is required by law to be registered within ten days of the owner either becoming employed, placing children in public school, or establishing residency. Registering your motor vehicle goes hand in hand with the titling process."
