Flight Fares ?

Do prices normally come down the closer you get to your travel date? I usually don't know that I'm going to be taking a vacation until a month or two before hand, now I have until September... I've beeb looking at the prices and they seem to be about what I remember then being when I've waited until a month to book. I was just wondering if there are usually any discounts anywhere in between there? Thanks for you help!

I would be patient and keep checking. I believe you will see some lower rates come spring or summer. We are going in June and I have been checking rates everyday. There are four of us and I try to not pay more than $800 to fly us all down. I have been lucky in the past to not pay more than that. We live in Columbus but we can get better rates if we fly out of Dayton. Last year we flew Airtran and paid under $750. If I remember correctly, I think I bought our tickets in March for our June trip last year.

I am registered on Travelocity. Once registered, you can set up a fare watcher where you can set up your origin and destination and they will email you when the rates lower. There is also another site called www.sidestep.com which will also check all the airlines (except Southwest) for rates. You will only find Southwest rates on their own website. You do not need to use Travelocity or Sidestep to book your flight, you can go to the airline's website to book if you want. I just like to use those sites to search the rates for me. However, I still check Airtran first because that's our preferred airline.
