First Trip to Universal!

Just got back today from visiting universal studios and ioa (yea I know this is a disney forum but if your a fan of awesome themed rides, then your atleast a little bit of a fan of universal)

I had actually been to uni once before when the park first opened, but I was like 8 or 9 then and the only thing I really remembered was the et ride

The parks were unusually empty, nothing I would ever expect universal or any florida theme park to look like in June! everything was basically a walk on, the most we waited for anything was the simpsons ride, and even that was just 15 min

My initial thoughts about the studio:
"This is like an alternate version of mgm"

"I wish mgm and the studios were to have a baby, it would be a perfect park for that whole hollywood thing that disney and universal were going for"

The first ride we went on was hollywood rip ride and rockit, I never had to put anything into a locker to get on a ride, this was new to me, thought it was really convenient that they gave you a certain time window to use it for free, and with groups where everyone is going on the ride, its a really great option if you dont have anyone to hold your stuff, the screens might be a little glitchy but theres always some uni person around if you need help. The ride was really good, love the first drop!

The next ride we did was disaster, I liked the fact that the subway station had a very 80s vibe, some things were startling because they were pretty much brand new to me but otherwise,I guess its like the backlot tour, you do it once every couple of years just to check up on it but otherwise it can die away or be replaced with a mummy type ride

Which brings me to the next ride, The Mummy! I found this ride to be amazing. I have never been on a ride like this before in my life! what a rush, it might most definitly be my new favorite ride. The ride had a 5 min wait and I simply couldnt get enough of it. I tip my hat to you universal, I dont think I have ever said "WOW" out loud on a ride before but this ride made me say it a couple of times! we ended up riding this like 7x it was just toooo good! well done universal! (btw does anyone know what that monitor in the queue with the lighted blue diamond does? it shows people walking in the queues but I'm clueless about its purpose)

It was then time to eat lunch, decided to have pizza from louies, pretty decent, but what really impressed me more about uni's food was the amount of options they had, seriously they got pretty much everything disney has and more, fried oreos anyone? holy bajeebus they were good

We then headed over to jaws, eh, i like the theming, and the kinetic energy, but its not something I'd be too interested in doing again for a while, otherwise, good to see it still running and taken care of. The cm was really good too ( idk what theyre called here but these "cm's" are up to par with disney cm's I didnt have one negative encounter with anyone who worked there, everyone was actually extremely polite and helpful, I mean they even wave to you as you start your ride and leave the platforms, something I only thought disney did and something I definitly wasnt expecting after hearing some of the stories on these boards about uni employees.

After Jaws, men in black... pretty good, didnt excepct it to be so big and long (thats what she said..lmao sorry im stupid) but it was pretty good, definitly like it more than buzz and I would say slllightly better than tsmm if for nothing else but the larger sets and more motion)

After men in black it was time for et, this was the only ride I really remembered from my first trip and it was more magical then I imagined it being, something about it, idk maybe because I'm an 80s baby and the ride reeks 1985 but I love this ride, especially the queue, its got that disney smell!

Got on Twister, nothing special at all,my thoughts, remove the first half of the show, and just take ppl directly to the actual tornado scene too much talk + too much standing = me putting my angry eyes on.

Shrek 4d was pretty good, doesnt have the heart philharmagic does and the 3d looks a little blurry but still a pretty good attraction nonetheless

Next up was the nicktoons , is jimmy neutron even on nickelodeon anymore? I know for sure the rugrats arent! ah well who cares, its pretty good, nothing to write home about tho

By this time we were exhausted and about to collapse from the heat, so we found a comfortable spot of shade in the little central park area, which I think is so awesome to have, just to be able to lay down in the middle of the park for a while was satisfactory enough but to be able to do it in this beautiful little area made it that much more sweeter. We layed down til we obviously took a nap, fell asleep for almost an hour, I have never fallen asleep in any theme park, but being that we had pretty much done everything we wanted to do, and this little spot of grass was calling our name, we gave in, and it felt great.. the rest of the day we spent, pretty much going back between mummy, et and rip ride and rockit..

Overall on a scale of 1-10 I would give uni studios a 6.. while their themeing is great (the new york streets are incredibly detailed) so is the majority of other areas in the park.. there simply isnt enough rides.. theres only so many times you can watch a theme park show, the rides are what keep people coming back, and if uni were to somewhow fuse the thrills of the mummy, and strike a chord in the heart with something nostalgic like et. uni would have a real winner on their hands

Up next: Islands of Adventure and how uni succeeded in finding that winner with TWWOHP.. Note to Disney: me and other disney fanboys will no longer have to tell you that you have to step your game up, TWWOHP will politely do that for us...To be continued

Definately the wrong forums, er wrong location. WDW Magic does have a USF forum or maybe the trip report forum.

BTW I really enjoyed the details. It is always interesting seein the parks through the eyes of a new visitor. You are right about the details in themeing at USF. Most place are extremely well themed and rides like The Mummy, MIB and Spiderman really give Disney a run for their money.

I can't wait to hear your thoughts about IOA.

I visited US/IOA in 2008, am going back again this Sept. I did enjoy US but probably my least favourite. It obviously doesn't compare to WDW for the theme. US had a more grown up look, obviously! After 2 years my memory of US is vague! Although I spent a week visiting, it didn't blow me away. SHREK was good, I enjoyed JAWS, & MIB but I was more impressed with the cueing area than the ride. THE SIMPSONS RIDE I loved, DISASTER was ok, I like the actual subway part but was bored with the stuff beforehand, TWISTER was ok, but it was just a few minutes and watching things moving through the air. HRRR was not there then but I don't do coasters any way! So didn't do ROTM, or T2. ET scares me and has done since I was a child!!! Now 33 but still break out in a sweat at the sound of his croaky voice!!! This may all sound negetive, I did like it and can't criticise it, it is just there were not many things that suited me.

I loved IOA!!!! Each land looked amazing, I enjoyed JURASSIC PARK, I even loved the RIVER ADVENTURE (I actually forgot there was an 85ft drop when I got on it, but managed to live through it and did it twice!). The way the DISCOVERY CENTRE made it look like the actual park was awesome. SUESS LANDING was cool, TOON LAGOON was also good, loved the Barges, both being on them and also shooting people with water from the bridge. Really enjoyed LOST CONTINENT, I think the talking fountain was funny (BTW does any one know if this is still there now TWWOHP is in place, as I heard the Sinbad show has now gone and the fountain was close?) My favourite land was MSHI, I wasn't a fan of Marvel before hand but now am! SPIDERMAN was the best ride I have ever been on!

I feel I am rambling so I will stop. To sum up - WDW is the best and unique, nothing compares. IOA was my 2nd best and US was ok, am going back to all 3 in September from England so they can't be that bad!:sohappy:

Glad you had a great time at Universal. Disney will always be number 1 for me but I do enjoy spending time at Universal as well. The blue glowing thing you were referring to in the Mummy queue is actually kinda funny. The screen shows you video of people walking across a bridge in the next room. When the thing lights up Blue lay your hand on it and this will cause a large jet of air to blow up from underneath the bridge you see in the video, thus scaring the crap outta the people in the next room! :ROFLOL:

You missed out on The Mummy. It's definitely a good coaster, but it's a great dark ride as well.

Why didn't you do T2? It's a 3-D show, and one of the best around at that.

Yeah I know The Mummy is supposed to be excellent, but I have never been on a coaster and don't think The Mummy is the best one to start with! My partner went on it and loved it although he did say it was intense!

I did attempt T2, I even did the Pre-show but not being a fan of confined spaces panicked just as the audience was entering the auditorium! After half an hour of cueing and waiting I had to get out! A big regret of mine, will do it in Sept!!!

Continued...

On sunday we made our way over to IOA, I read on screamscape that hp should be open but that we should get there early, so we did, we arrived half an hour before the park opened, and they finally opened the gates at 8:55

My initial reaction
"wow they really did go all out on the theming"

"is that animal kingdom background music?"

"the main entrance has an ak vibe, did the rejected ak ideas for storefronts make its way over to ioa? who knows who cares, it looks cool"

Now I have been following the progress of hp since it was announced that universal got the rights to it, but after all this time, after seeing all the concept art, and reading the recent ride reviews and spoilers, and seeing a bunch of pictures, seeing hp in person is striking!! Universal has really really outdone themselves, and took a big giant ________ on mickey's head while they were at it!

Standing at the entrance to the wizarding world, you believe harry potter's world is real, the buildings are pretty tall, so when your in it, you are literally surrounded in this world, it is simply amazing, and it was the most packed part of the park! just about everyone had butterbeer souveneir mugs, and nearly every kid was holding a $28 wooden stick..No detail was left out, NONE!

To disney: This is the way its supposed to be done, when you get a franchise that is this big ( ex. star wars) This is what you do with it! I am so grateful that Uni got the rights to hp, Disney would have never done something like this for harry, but uni did, Thank you Universal Creative!

On to the ride
The castle is awesome, everything you would expect to see in hogwarts, you saw in the queue. The line moves pretty fast and there are alot of things to see.. Now for the ride itself, my honest personal opinion? they pulled every trick in the book, and it paid off, the ride was definitly great, but I couldnt help feeling like they couldve done a little more with it. Harry potter's world is bigger than the things they focused on but on the other hand the things they did focus on were big! I wont give anything away, its better to go in fresh..(if you get a chance try to get a view of one of the other ride vehicles, it is crazy to see the kuka arm travelling on a track, you dont realize how big this thing is, and how high you are til you caught a glimpse of one of the other vehicles in action, the possibilities for this kind of ride vehicle are endless)

WWOHP was the only packed part of the park, but we were still able to ride the forbidden journey 3x without waiting much, Im not to sure if the general public know that there are soft openings for new attractions, but Im glad they dont, I cant imagine how packed this place is going to be when they officially open it on friday and people start coming in droves.

The rest of the park was pretty much a walk on for everything, the only thing we really waited for the whole day was the forbidden journey.

We decided to take a break from potter and headed on over to jurasic park. Loooved the drop! we got off and got right back on again. After that since we were only a bit wet, and it was reaally hot we decided to get all the wet attractions out of the way did dudley do right's which was awesome, alot of static animatronics, the theming here is just a shade below disney's standards but I forgive them because it was good fun.

After dudley's we headed over to popeye's, the same thing I said about theming for dudley's applies to popeye's, but again I forgive them as both of these rides are big, and pretty long and both a really welcome break from the heat.

We decided to have lunch at the jurassic park discovery area, just some cheeseburgers and fries. I will say this about uni's food quality, its not really as good as disney's but then again theme park food is theme park food, not tavern on the green, so I wasnt excpecting much, but I digress.

After lunch we did the hulk, awesome coaster, love the way that it sounds like its actually roaring. From there we headed on over to poseidon's fury, incredible building, cheesy show, but the finale made all that standing worth it, especially when everything goes black and all of a sudden your in this room filled with water, wasnt excpecting that audible wow but it came out!

After that we did the seuss trolly, eh its perfect for kids, so is the cat in the hat ride, good for me to do it once to see what its all about, but i wont be going back til I have a couple of children.

I completely forgot about spiderman, I heard this was the best ride in the world, it was really good, but I dont think its the best. Theming here is top notch though, but in terms of ride experience,eh, move me like the mummy moved me and then we might be talking best ride in the world, still an awesome ride though.

The rest of the day was spent doing our favorites and going back and forth between wwohp. Overall I would have to say IOA is wayyyyy better than uni, alot more rides, and more interesting ones at that, less shows, better theming, It is definitly a disney park, parts of it are a bit six flags, but for the most part, its even better than some of the things disney has.

Overall, the Universal Resort gets 2 thumbs up from me, city walk is the downtown disney that should've been, seriously disney, take notes, city walk is how its done, as we were leaving there were people coming in droves all dressed up and ready for the nightlife, thats a whole bunch of money you wont be seeing mickey, keep sleeping on the whole downtown disney thing. City walk will definitly be getting my money next time unless downtown disney shapes up a bit.

But all in all I am proud to say I popped my universal orlando cherry, and I had a great time doing it. I will definitly be going back. In the future I might even substitute the days I normally wouldve gone to mgm or ak and head over to uni and ioa instead, they're just a better value for me, with so much more thrilling attractions, they will definitly be considered a bit more heavily the next time I drive up to orlando. Thank You Universal Creative you guys really dont get the credit your due.

Ok, The Mummy's not something I would think would be too bad for a first timer, but I can understand. If you go to the Magic Kingdom before your next visit, ride BTMR and you should be about ready for The Mummy.

I love Universal and IOA. Great, great parks. Both of them. Each one has their own charm and I flip-flop on the ones I like better. It changes.

Would love to see Potter someday the next time I go back there. I guess the only thing I am still bitter about is that Kong was taken out in place of Mummy. Now I love Mummy and it's a great ride probably better than Kong, but you have to wonder how they couldn't have let both co-exist.

Anyways, I LOVED Jurassic Park. What a ride. Could be longer, but still a great one. You know it's fake but the T-Rex at the end.........:animwink:
