First time visitor to Disneyland...observations

Living in Orlando I go to WDW more than a healthy number of times. Today was my first ever visit to Disneyland, and I just have some observations I'd like to share (if this is the right place).

1) Walking around a Magic-Kingdom park that isn't WDW Magic Kingdom was surreal. While the general location of the rides is similar, its not exact. I enjoyed the feeling of adventure/discovery and trying to figure my way around. Also, there's a smaller/more intimate feeling I came to appreciate about some sections of the park, such as Frontier Land and Fantasy Land.

2) Overall I much prefer WDW Tomorrowland to DL's. I didn't like the lack of rides/activity in DL's TW, and Space Mountain is sortof shoved in a corner of the land. From a ride perspective WDW's Space Mountain is superior; DL's Buzz Lightyear beats WDW's.

3) Paint the Night Parade: fantastic parade. Great soundtrack, very relevant use of Disney characters, creative costume design, and the lights are amazing. Would love to see this added to WDW. It pays homage to the Main Street Electrical Parade while keeping everything fresh.

4) As much as I love Wishes, the Disneyland Forever fireworks show is the fireworks show I've been dreaming of seeing at the Magic Kingdom. Watch a video online, you'll see why. I would love to see WDW retire Wishes and move in this sort of direction in the future.

5) The Haunted Mansion was decorated and the narration changed to reflect The Nightmare Before Christmas storyline. Not a big Nightmare Before Christmas fan but absolutely enjoyed the change in scenery. Again I would like to see WDW take this approach.

6) Single Rider lines were available at most attractions (including Soarin'). As somebody who typically does these things alone this was great for me. I was able to get most of the big attractions done within my first 5 hours on property, which meant more time to relax or re-ride if I so felt it. Amazingly I didn't see any 'abuse' of the single rider lines (where entire families get in the single rider line to bypass the stand-by line). Every single-rider line I waited in was less than 10 minutes long.

7) Cars Land is the best themed land I've ever set foot in. Radiator Springs Racers is the best attraction at DL, and is definitely a top-5 favorite Disney ride for me. If the same people who put this land together are taking care of Avatar, Star Wars, and Toy Story for us, then we're in good hands.

Anyway, very fun getting the change of scenery. I still love WDW more, but I really hope some of the fresh new things I saw at DL are in the works for us at WDW.

Were the lines finally manageable for Radiator Springs? I only ask because we usually alternate between WDW and DL and the last few times we did DL the lines were so insanely long if you didn't manage to get a fastpass the ride just wasn't worth it...

Also curious have they gotten the effects on Thunder Mountain working properly? Near the top of the big climb when the blast happens you are supposed to see a big puff of smoke come down, but it seemed to only work maybe 1 in 3 times.

That effect was working this past January when I was there. It looked great!

We had that same feeling at DL. One minute we knew exactly where we were heading, the next it wasn't there!

Single rider line has always worked great for me.

I was amazed with the lines in general all day. I rode Radiator Springs three times, all single rider line at various points in the day and not once did I wait longer than 10 minutes. Each of those times I didn't see the stand-by queue longer than 45 minutes. Soarin' was a 30 minute wait (5 minutes in the single rider line), California Screamin' was 30 minutes (walk on for the single rider line), Toy Story Mania I waited 30 minutes in line in the stand-by queue (no single rider line), Big Thunder was 25 minutes, Space Mountain was 25 minutes, Matterhorn was 30 minutes (5 minute wait for single riders). Other than those the longest lines I saw in the parks were at the Haunted Mansion (I waited 40 minutes) and Mickey's Fun Wheel (I waited 30 minutes).

And the effects on Big Thunder were fully functional. It took me off-guard because I was sitting in the front and had no idea there was going to be that big puff of smoke...I ducked, so +1 to the Imagineers.

Glad you had a great time! If you love WDW and are an obsessive fan (like most on these boards) you really owe it to yourself to visit Disneyland and California Adventure. It's charming, fun, unexpected, and so...magical! Thanks for posting!

You mention Cars Land, have you ever been to Diagon Alley? Also, when i went to DLR over the summer, I think their upkeep and cleaning is much better than WDW.

After visiting DL for my first time in January I'd have to agree with the OP. It really was great but it didn't quite satisfy my Disney "itch" which is why there's a WDW trip coming up. I have to say that there was one big turn off at DL though and that was the fact that the city is all around you. I don't know why but I just felt like everywhere we were I could see the city in the background...maybe it's just me. Since I recently moved to Phoenix I will be back for sure since it's practically in my backyard now

Then it must have improved because about 2 years ago the single rider line was over an hour long approaching 2 hours.

I've been there for race weekends for the last few years. Two Disneyland half marathons then Star Wars. That was probably off-season. Don't know much about DLR seasons.

I agree with everything you said. Except, I didn't get to see the parades or fireworks shows. They weren't going when we were there. But, I would have loved to!!

I have a pass for that side of town. Diagon Alley is a fantastic land, however I don't have any attachment to Harry Potter (haven't read the books or seen the movies). I have a greater attachment to Cars; it was released when I just began driving and got my first car, so the whole road-trip/scenery thing really resonates with me so I have a greater attachment to Cars. To see all that in real life was just incredible, I felt like I was in the movie.

Our trips to DL are usually in October or April at spring break... Not sure if those times are considered off season or not... October though always seems pretty full at DL... probably seems more crowded at DL than WDW in October.. especially in the evenings at DL when it appears a huge mass of local annual passholder swoop in just long enough to crowd the parks to watch Fantasmic.

I completely agree with you about Cars Land. I fell completely in love with it (as well as the rest of DCA) when I went on my first trip last fall. It's absolutely beautiful and so on point with the theming. I seriously hope that the new lands coming to WDW will be as perfect :)

October is pretty busy, especially on the weekends. April can be a little busy because of the Spring Breaks, but it isn't bad. Summer and Christmas time are the crazy times. Mostly the busy times coincide with school breaks.

Great summary! I'm about to go to the same thing myself this coming weekend. Glad to hear you had success with single rider lines!

4) As much as I love Wishes, the Disneyland Forever fireworks show is the fireworks show I've been dreaming of seeing at the Magic Kingdom. Watch a video online, you'll see why. I would love to see WDW retire Wishes and move in this sort of direction in the future.

Personally opinion alone (obviously), but I 50% agree with this statement and 50% disagree. I think from a technical standpoint, Disneyland Forever is the much better show... between the incorporation of the projections (including on the buildings on Main Street), the more impressive fireworks, and the other "props", from a visual standpoint, it's a much more impressive show. However, again, personal opinion alone, I think Wishes has a much better "flow" and soundtrack (then again, the "new Renaissance" Disney films [Little Mermaid through about Hercules] have always been my favorite and that's really all Wishes is... I still haven't warmed up to the Pixar characters being in Disney in general... I know it's an inevitability, but yeah...). I feel like Disneyland Forever jumps all over the place with no logical connections between songs/segments... Wishes has that classic flow of "start slow/small, slowly build, get to a "comedic"/light hearted section, decent to a scary/frightening section, end with a triumphant/big/majestic section with lots of crescendos and musical upward modulations" (they do the same thing to an extent in Fantasmic! and World of Color [well, at least the original version of World of Color]). Personally, if they did a Wishes 2.0 where they plussed the fireworks and maybe incorporated projections on Main Street, I'd be totally happy with that...

Oddly, I do really, REALLY like Paint the Night... (even with the excessive amount of Pixar characters)
