First time visitor for 30th Birthday in 2022

Hi guys!

First time poster here after I've been lurking for a while.
Me and my boyfriend will hopefully be making our way to WDW in 2022 to celebrate my 30th birthday at the end of February.
I have a good idea about how to handle the parks and where to go to maximize our stay (how to ride as much as possible etc).
(For reference; we went to Tokyo DisneySea two years ago and finished ALL rides after 5 hours by planning our fastpasses agressively)

Now WDW is on a whole other level... I can't even fathom the size of this whole resort, so just seeing that will be daunting.

My boyfriend isn't completely sold on staying for too long at the resorts. I'm really the Disneyfreak out of the two of us, but he loved our day at DisneySea a few years ago. Therefore I'm wondering how many days we'd need to be able to see (ride) every major attraction in every park? Is it an option to park-hop from Disney Studios for example to be able to fit in a half-day stay at another park for example?

We are travelling from Sweden and the cost of staying at the resort is ridiculously expensive for us coming from abroad (our currency isn't as strong as the dollar), however if we plan far in advance we should be OK. I have a hard time getting to know the resorts on property. I would love to stay at something close to the Magic Kingdom. I've been looking at both the Contemporary and the Polynesian. The Polynesian might be more exciting for us as it's very different from our culture at home. Contemporary seems to be offering a lot nicer views? The full price options for both Polynesian and the Contemporary seems to be over our budget, but with a special offer they will certainly work. Are there any other nice resorts with something "special" that might work?

When booking through the Disney site they only give you the chance of buying park tickets in one category (parkhopper or one park ticket) for the whole stay. I'm thinking that we might be able to save some money on having one day tickets at the major resorts (MK, AK, EPCOT) and then have a parkhopper for Disney Studios. Is it possible to book different kinds of tickets for my stay?
When booking, are you required to pay the full sum of the stay right away, or can I divide it up in several payments during the year?

If you have any tips on something special to do for the birthday that would be greatly appreciated.

I've been following a lot of different WDW vlogs on YouTube to get a better picture of everything, but it's just so big that it's hard to get it.
I think I've seen everything by DisneyFoodBlog, TheTimTracker and have recently begun watching AllEars on YouTube. Do you have any other tips on WDW vlogs?

Well the good thing is youve got time to make decisions, save more vacation funds and see what and how Disney alters their policies and makes their way through as we all hope possibly things return to a normal state. Keep following this and other sites that report changes so you can be best informed on how to go. Other entertaining vlogs we enjoy tuning in for are Paging Mr Morrow, Michael Kay, Prince Charming Dev, WDW couple, and there are many, so many more to list.
Weve stayed at both Poly & Contemp and both are nice. Poly is going through refurb construction at this time. As an alternative, and more affordable choice weve gone to POFQ, but thats not available at this time. The Moderate resorts are all fairly nice, not so different from the Deluxe, and more in a price range you might find more appealing. Check out the various sites to get reviews and photos to see what best suits you. Everyone has different tastes and ways they prefer one over another. Overall the Moderates are better options to the Values, mostly guests desire the Values for the cheaper rates. Even cheaper would be staying off site but we prefer being in the Disney themed resorts, but again theres a biiig difference in costs going off site.
We book our vacation, put down a deposit and pay over time. There is a time limit to paying the trip off.
Right now Disney is going back to allowing park hopping. We hop on our trips, but it may not be a good value for you since this will be your first WDW trip. Theres a lot to see and do in all the parks that it may be better for you to concentrate on focusing on what each park has to offer. If money is an issue not taking PH's will be a big savings. you dont say how many days you have. We start off planning each park one day, then return to redo them on rotating days, giving more days to MK & EP. We give a day or 1/2 days to DS. You may want to give a day to the water parks or other kinds of entertainment, golf or mini golf. If you give 2 days to each park you can pretty much get the majority of things in each park. Go early, concentrate on the popular attractions first. When FP+ get brought back utilize them.
For your B-day you may want to arrange for dining at a special restaurant of your choice, more costly that you ordinarily wouldnt choose. check out all the menu sites. We enjoy Cali Grill at the contemp. for a celebration dinner. Arrange for a special massage, or tour if they get back as an option, same with a dining entertainment show like HDD. Again your going in 2022 so youll have to see what Disney does with bringing back some or everything.
WDW is expansive so there is a lot of walking and using transportation. Get yourself in shape, get to know your way around the parks and property. Try planning out your day and routes around the parks. The guide book Unofficial Guide to WDW has step by step touring plans of how to attack the parks that can be helpful and save you time.

Thank you for your great answer JIMINYCR!

Great tips on other Disney Vlogs! Will definitely keep my Disney appetite alive until 2022. 😍
POFQ - Port Orleans French Quarter? Neither of us have been to New Orleans, so this will definitely be an exciting resort to look into! Thanks!
Do you perhaps know how far in advance you can book our trip? Will try to book as

What are the perks you get from staying onsite other than (possible) extra magic hours, close proximity to the parks and free airport transport?

Is it possible to "do" MK, AK, EP in one day each, or will that mean we'll basically have to rush through the day?
Given the crowd levels of the day this will differ I guess..

There's so much else we want to do in Orlando so I hope we can get in a maximum of 5 days at WDW.
A tour on my birthday sounds very exciting. We are more adventurous so a tour is more exciting for us than a massage or spa experience. I've heard a lot about O'Hana and will try to book that for an evening. The new Space restaurant in Epcot also sounds really cool. California Grill looks amazing for fireworks on the birthday perhaps.

Thanks again for all of your help!

How exciting! What a great way to celebrate your 30th birthday!

I really hope WDW is back to pre-pandemic operations by the time you take your trip! Most of my advice, such as it is, is based on what would be considered 'normal' operations. We have no way of knowing what the Disney environment will be like in 2 years.

We really enjoy staying on the property. Yes, it is pricey, but as the saying goes - you get what you pay for lol. We have stayed at Port Orleans twice and LOVED it! I would say it is probably my favorite of the Moderate resorts. If you are planning for full days in the parks, the Moderate resorts are a great compromise - specially since you will be spending most of your time in the room sleeping or preparing for your day in the park. The water taxi to DS is very relaxing and gives you some great views from the water of both the resort and DS. Another advantage to being a resort guest is earlier access to FastPass reservations.

One of the best time savers we discovered in recent years is using Uber for some of our transportation. This is a HUGE time saver if you want to visit or have dinner at one of the other resorts (I personally love Sanaa at the Animal Kingdom Villas). Using the Disney transportation to go from one resort to another can take upwards of 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

One of the great things about dining at WDW is the incredible variety of options available. Just about every cuisine is represented - I do not envy you trying to find a few to visit on your trip. I can only think of one time we did not have a positive dining experience - and that restaurant is no longer on the property. The dinner shows are pricey, but truly fabulous! The entertainment is top notch! I would also recommend doing one of the character dining experiences - we really enjoy Tusker House in AK.

As for the parks... wow. There is so much to see and do at each one - any Extra Magic Hours will be a must! Sounds like you already have some experience using the FastPass system so be sure to maximize those in each park. I'm sure you already have a pretty good idea of what attractions are the hardest to get!

I know I am kind of all over the place with this post... but I can't say enough positive things about the Disney Magical Express (DME) transportation to and from the airport. It has worked flawlessly for us every time we have used it. It is so nice to walk off the plane and catch a ride to your resort without having to mess with baggage claim and wrestling your bags to your room. Even if you only use it one way (to get to your resort) it is worth it. Depending on what gate you arrive in, the walk to the bus is a healthy one. But, since you will be traveling from Sweden, you will definitely enjoy stretching your legs after a long day of traveling!

Hope these suggestions help! There are lots of people smarter than me on the forums so I'm sure you will get lots of useful tips!

Dear Steve,

Thank you so much for more great suggestions!
What struck me was your mention of it taking 1½-2 hrs getting around between different resorts. It clearly shows how huge this behemoth is, haha.

My boyfriend is a bit older than me and sometimes have back problems, so last when we were at DisneySea, I kinda ran around and got the fastpasses while he catched up with me at our upcoming ride. It worked well for us, but I've never heard that you can book fastpasses in advance. So you basically book a certain timeslot in a Disney Travel App and then show that to the ride attendant at the FP line? That sounds awesome and then you want have to run around like a jojo in different lands if you just need to get that one FP in that land before riding something else in another land.

How are views on LGBTQ couples at the resorts? We're in a very liberal bubble in Sweden, and I've felt very up and down about this when we've been in America. It's different from city to city and from neighborhood to neighborhood I've felt. But it feels like Orlando is a very liberal place (and certainly at the resorts)? I don't know. We're not very clingy, but sometimes like to hold hands. Is it frowned upon?

Uber is a good advice! Will definitely keep that in mind if we need to get somewhere quick!

How does the DME work? Do you have to pick up your luggage at baggage claim or it gets picked up and sent automatically to the resort? Sounds very impressive!

Thank you again for great advice Steve!

Hello again!

Happy to share what little knowledge I have! 😁

What takes so long to travel between the resorts is the Disney transportation. There aren't buses that run between the resorts, so you have to catch a bus to DS or one of the parks, and then hop on the bus to the resort you are going to. Then the same in reverse to get back to your resort. The first time we visited a different resort for dinner we spent 3 hours round trip taking the bus. There probably isn't anywhere on the property you can't get to via Uber in 15-20 minutes.

The FastPass system at WDW is pretty slick. As a resort guest you can make FP reservations online up to 60 days before your visit (again, this is pre-pandemic). There are some restrictions, I would recommend visiting the Disney World website to familiarize yourself with how the FPs work. We always use a magic band... and your FP reservation can be tied to your reservation/account via the magic band. You get a one hour window for your FP, and you just scan your magic band at the FastPass entrance and boom... you are in!

I will have to let others comment on your LGBTQ questions. I just don't have the experience/knowledge to intelligently answer, and I want to make sure you get accurate information! Apologies - please do not take it as any kind of judgement on my part. Far from it.

DME is something that is scheduled through your reservation. Once you have your flight information you give that information to the MDE services via phone. Disney sends you some luggage tags (yellow ones) that look very much like what the airline puts on your luggage at the airport. There is a barcode with your specific reservation information on each tag. You put it on your luggage before you check in at your departure airport. Once you arrive in Orlando, the luggage gets routed to a Disney's luggage area at the airport (instead of a baggage claim carousel), and Disney sorts it for delivery to your resort. Then the wonderful people at the resort deliver your luggage to your room. You don't touch it at all! I assume the service is the same for incoming international flights as for domestic flights. I would suggest researching on the WDW website to get specifics using DME with international flights.

Staying onsite keeps you in the Disney magic and immerses you in the feel and spirit of Disney. The CM's are extremely gracious and helpful. You are closer to all the parks and entertainment. The transportation is at times slow but efficient. After a long park day its nice to ride the bus back. Some of the bus drivers are very entertaining. Using Uber can save you time but if you are looking to save money, its another expense and the buses are not. If you are wanting to go off property to explore Orlando, its a great option. There are many wonderful spots throughout the area to enjoy. Weve done many off site trips along with our Disney vacations.
Disney is about the most accepting companies you can find across the board. There are same sex couples, LGBTQ, all races welcome. No one is restricted. They have some gay pride merchandise available in their shops. Disney has allowed gay days dates in the past where couples gather for specific days ( although it is an event Disney hasnt officially planned but sanctions) Holding hands wont be an issue. If you get looks from other guests, so be it. Disney has long been accepting of different lifestyles.
Trying to do 3 parks in one day would have you missing out on so much, and a waste of a lot of time traveling. You are better off if you do go splitting days doing only two. MK is a definite full day park. The other 3 depending on what you do and how you enjoy them could possibly be split. I find enough in them all to do full days. Some people do look at AK to be a 1/2 day park, splitting the other half with DHS or EP. The EP pavilions and shops are very interesting but again, some people dont see them as exciting. Its all about your tastes and what interests you that will determine how much time you want to spend in each park.
Regarding the person with back problems....Some of the Disney rides can be rough, jostling you around, side to side, quick turns and stops, and people with back issues may need to be selective. You can go on Youtube to watch ride throughs of attractions to see what they are like and determine those to be more careful with. AK safari ride for ex is very bumpy, Star tours and Dinosaur will throw you side to side.
At this point in time, you have to get your luggage from baggage claim due to Covid restrictions. As everything else that may change in the future.

Just a quick response to the LGBTQ question.
All CMs should treat you with respect and kindness. Photographers should happily take your pictures hugging, holding hands, kissing, whatever they would do for a straight couple.

Short story: my wife and I celebrated our engagement at WDW and were wearing “Just Engaged” pins. We went through the character spot and we were chatting with Minnie. She asked where our fiancés were and when we pointed to each other she was very fun about misunderstanding. She spent a few extra min with us and told us we should talk to Mickey because she didn’t have a ring yet...
It was a sweet and funny exchange that feels very much representative of my experience at WDW.

We now travel with our kids and have never had any issues aside from the occasional fellow tourist who might give us a look, or make a comment to themselves. We just ignore them. We’re there to see Mickey and rides and have a good time, not to see or listen to weirdos who have a problem with who I am. 🤷‍♀️

I see why that makes transport between resorts problematic. 20mins anywhere via Uber sounds awesome. Some of the distances looks way too long. Is walking even possible say from POFQ to MK?
How is Monorail/Skyliner transport? Is it quick to go between parks via them?

Magic Bands look awesome. Will be a fun thing to customize and arrange before the trip!

DME sounds freaking awesome. We've never had that kind of service with baggage transport ever. Here's hoping it will be back for 2022!

Thank you so much for great advice Steve! 😍

I'm glad to hear about Disney being so accepting. We are naturally quite discreet so then it wont be a big problem.

I think so too about doing many parks during a day. I just read that Studios is quite a small park, but it now has Galaxy's Edge AND the new Runaway Rail, which might make us stay there longer. Do you think it is possible to do Studios in half a day (given we maybe get boarding passes for Rise of the Resistance and FP for Runaway Rail)?
We're not very into zoos so to speak, so AK might only be interesting for the rides. Is that then maybe also a halfday park?

We're still planning on one day per park, but considering the above maybe halfdays at Studios and AK. During the rest of those days either relax at the hotel and check out Disney Springs, check out other resorts or get a parkhopper for the day and head back into MK.

Great advice regarding jerky rides. We went on Journey to the Center of the Earth at DisneySea, which is a bit like Test Track, and also the new Nemo ride, which is a bit like Star Tours. We were fine then, but it's great to have a heads up so we can prepare for it being jerky. Very thoughtful of you to mention this. Thank you!

Disney just amazes me when it comes to magic magic experiences like these for their visitors. It is really NO work for them, but it means soooooo much! I love it!

And congratulations on having such a wonderful family! 😍

Those who do a half day at AK usually go to EP or DHS for the remainder of the day. If you are wanting to go on RotR you have to arrange a boarding pass and do DHS in the morning. New rule just released locks you out if you park hop to the park second. For now at least. Again there may be lots of policy changes between now and when you go.

You could do DHS as a half day. Remember that any new attraction is targeted by guests so there will be building lines immediately and longer waits for them. Besides MRR, SDD is overly popular as well. So who can tell how long it will take to do all the prime attractions. And if you are a SW fan you may spend more time in that area also.

No you cant walk to MK from POFQ. You can walk from the Contemp and now GF to MK.

If its opened up when you go to DS, check into getting tickets for the Cirque du Soleil Drawn to Life show. It sounds amazing.

If you book a package through Disney your tickets can either be one park per day or park hopper for all days ~ you cannot book a mix of both.

Buying single one day tickets for 3 parks and a one day park hopper for Disney Studios will be more expensive than buying a 4-day park hopper ticket, since Disney discounts multiple day tickets.
