First Haunted Mansion Reviews

I wouldn't be too worried, at least not yet ;). The very first reviews of Pirates were just like this, claiming it was a mess and nothing more than a cheap attempt by Disney to make profit on a theme park ride. It seemed to me with Pirates (and now HM) that people wanted to condemn it before it was even open, just because of its premise, a theme park ride turned into a movie. We all see what happened with Pirates and its astounding success.

Now, I don't anticipate HM doing as well as Pirates, mainly because its main focus is actually creating a movie around a ride vs Pirates which was a movie "inspired" by a ride, if you get my drift. HM is also not being marketed nor written to be a "scary" movie. The first reviews have condemned it for not being scary, when it has been pretty clear, at least since the trailers have been shown, that this wasn't supposed to be a typical, scary Haunted House movie, but rather a "family" flick.

I also do not take kindly to the reviews on Ain't it cool news due to the quite obscene language used in their reviews. I find it very immature and un-called for. Their review may be dead-on, but its pretty hard for me to take it seriously.

I hate it when critics jump to conclusions because these movies are "based" on Disney attrctions. For some reason, they think its just going to be a bunch of animatronic singing dolls or something. Half of them usually have no idea what the attractions are like in the first place, and just use a bunch of overused stereotypes about Disney to make fun of them. Pirates had nothing to do with the ride. The ride portion of it was just sort of a wink at the attraction, but in the end, the only thing the ride did was give it a pirate theme. The rest was original story, so there is nothing to really compare it to.

And they always use the same old joke:

"What's next, "Its a Small World, the Movie"?

Actually, they wrote a script for it in the 70's(according to Jim hill)I took the liberty of copy and pasting the summary of the script here:Imagine (that) it's the day afternoon tomorrow, with the constantly escalating tensions of the world raised to fever pitch. (When) even the smallest spark can start a fire. And then it does.

The spark's name is Aleksei, the nine-year-old son of the Russian Consul General in Paris. Full of curiosity and the stories that he's heard about the "evil" Chinese, the boy ventures across the boulevard and over the fence to the Consulate of Communist China -- where he is caught by Chinese security guards who take him into custody. When the Russians learn of Aleksai's capture and detention, they demand his immediate release and, naturally, are refused. The rankled tempers become a shouting match of spying and kidnapping accusations.

And -- when the story of Aleksai hits the media -- millions of people hear (about) it. (And resulting media firestorm brings Red China and the U.S.S.R. to the very brink of war.)

Suddenly the "Aleksai Affair" is an urgent matter for the United Nations. However, it quickly becomes clear that -- while there may be calmer heads here -- (there is fuel being thrown) on the fire. There are people (in the world) who would like to see a conflagration for their own profit. Particularly Alexander Bashillian, the despotic ruler of a small nation in a backwater of the world that only has one major industry -- munitions.

Into this desperate situation walks a most unlikely group of heroes: the students of the United Nations school, a special educational facility for the children of U.N. Ambassadors. They're a small group of kids of different races, from different countries and ethnic backgrounds that -- (when they're) forced together, have found that they can get along just fine.

These kids are young enough to think that the world should do as they do. But what can the children of the U.N. Ambassadors do keep the world from blowing apart?

Disappear.

When they do, in a faked mass kidnapping plot hatched by the son of the U.N. Ambassador from Iceland and the daughter of the U.S. Ambassador, the "Aleksai Affair" is instantly old news. Forgetton by everyone ... except for Bashillian, the munitions despot.

Alexander tries to stir the fires (of war) by casting blame for the crime on one -- or both -- of the nations entangled in the original affair. When that fails, Bashillian sends his agents to join the thousands already on the hunt. But with a dark goal in mind: to find & kill the children of the U.N. Ambassadors. With the hope of making a bad situation worse.

But the United Nations' children have other plans. Not just to stop Bashillian and his evil agents. But to stop the world as well. To bring our planet back from the brink of disaster.

Not much to do with the ride, but sounds like an okay movie.

I think the real problem for The Haunted Mansion is its star, Eddie Murphy. Murphy is a great comedic talent and he does very good voice work (i.e. Mulan and Shrek) but that is also where his talent ends. He is not an actor. Murphy has been making movies for over twenty years now. Most of his films have been box office disasters. Murphy does one thing (and only one thing) good. If you need a loquacious, wise-cracking, clever, fast-talking and self-confident urban black then Eddie Murphy is the man. In short, he ain't no Johnny Depp.

However this could turn out to be a good movie in spite of Murphy. We'll have to wait and see.

I was at my local movie theater this weekend to see Intolerable Cruelty and they had up a Haunted Mansion display that was really cute. It was little headstones like from a cemetery except the names were all funny.

I actually think Eddie Murphy will be good in this movie. He's a very funny guy, and though not all of his films have been great, he's definitely had some very very good ones. And I don't think it's true that most of his film have been box office disasters.

maybe you should check out imdb.com they may not be all to correct on the trvia, quotes and stuff submitted by users. but the facts and figures like the money made, would say otherwise. Eddie Murphy has had MANY box office diasters since BHC3.

remember, Pluto Nash was pushed back about 2 years because it wasn't GOOD enough. and look at what we got in return.
