Search for cause of monorail fire continues
By LARRY LANGE
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER
Seattle's monorail to the Seattle Center, shut down Memorial Day by an electrical fire, will remain out of service while center officials determine what caused wiring to short-circuit and ignite the fire.
BACKGROUND
See Monday's story:
150 rescued from Monorail fire
The monorail system, which is heavily used by tourists and consists of a blue train and a red train, carries about 2 million passengers annually.
Eight passengers and a firefighter were treated for smoke inhalation as a result of Monday's fire, the first in the history of the 42-year-old blue train, which was examined by several engineers Tuesday.
The short-circuit occurred in wiring to one of the train's motors. Flames shot out from the undercarriage and up the side of the train 6 to 8 feet from its rear. About 150 passengers, trapped inside, were moved to the front of the train and evacuated onto the red train and by firefighters.
Center spokesman Perry Cooper said both trains will be kept out of service for now because both have the same kind of electrical systems. If the problem is present in both systems, Cooper said, "we want to correct it before we put the red train back into service."
The fire damaged the metal shielding on the lower edge of the blue train, destroyed the bellows between two cars and partially destroyed two seat cushions.
